I have an Olympus SP-310 digital camera, the appropriate underwater housing, and the Olympus UFL-1 slave strobe. If I set the UFL on TTL, what settings should I set the camera on? Or maybe I should ask the more general question of what settings the strobe and the camera should be on. The owner's manuals are useless. I've tried asking Olympus twice and got no response. Any help would be appreciated.

The whole point of having an external strobe is o get the light source away from the optical axis of your lens and sensor. You're right about how useless the Olympus blurb is about their product:

7.1 Megapixel Digital Camera : Optical Lens Digital Camera &gt Accessories Guide

Here's a review of the camera which may shed some light (sic) on the subject:

Digital Cameras - Olympus SP-310 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

If you don't have a fiber optic cable then you may want to tape a reflector, on your U/W housing, over your camera's internal flash. Set it so that the flash output is directed towards your UFL-1 strobe. Your best bet is to use manual control with your camera. Set thestrobe to the lowest level that will trigger your UFL-1; set the ISO no higher than 200 (lower ISO's are finer); set your aperture to ƒ5.6-ƒ8; take a few pictures at depth adjusting your shutter speed to obtain the best background color (faster shutter speeds will underexpose the background for darker more saturated colors); then adjust your strobe for your subject.

I seem to recall that Sea & Sea made the claim their YS-25 DX somehow mimicked TTL from the camera>NOT<. The UFL- looks like S&S made it.

Hi Roy,
I've used a YS27DX with my old SP350 and here's what I know. In the flash settings on the camera you'll find a symbol that looks like a lightning bolt. The above poster says to put the camera into slave mode then select level 1. I know this will work with the UFL-1 in slave mode but it might be looking for a preflash in TTL mode. This tells the camera to fire a ttl flash all the time. You'll want to use a fiber optic cable with your flash. Its made by sea&sea (modified YS-17) and they always recess the fiber receiver in the housing so it won't always fire without a cable. As stated above, find a way to block your internal flash. (I simply put black duct tape on the PT-030 housing diffuser and slid it into place) or you can use the black out kit supplied with a Sea&Sea fiber optic cable. Hope that helps.
