Some airlines are talking about allowing personal cellphone usage in flight.

Fortunately, most people won't get reception ;)

This is very exciting technology. I can't wait to be able to talk and send texts underwater....Wait, don't I hide underwater so the office can't reach me???

I suppose it could be useful in very specific circumstances.

Terry

Yup I have to agree with you. They can call 911 for help because I’m strangling the yahoo who was yakking their head off on the bottom. :D

Hey!

My boss is a diver. (Well, not really. But he's certified and gets Sport Diver.)

So if HE find out about this, I'm screwed.

Great! Now 911 can get another load of non-emergency calls from yet another source:

"Hello, 911? It's about my boyfriend, OK? He, like, LEFT me even though he - you know - said he would be my buddy and I'm just - hold on ... he's back OK? But [No, you can't talk to them - NO, I'm on the phone] OK, like, later ..."

There are definite benefits when this technology is incorporated into education (as in distance learning) and even in television / film production. Imagine a research team of Scientific Divers out in the field working with an inner-city class on an environmental impact study. Questions can be routed in real time to the team even when under water and likewise answers can be returned. Since it's a cell link, there's no doubt that the data channel can be accessed for a wide variety of applications - such as return vitals (depths, pressure, heading,...) or video or any number of other add-on sensors.

I think it's a great concept. I dive with the Ocean Reef Neptune Space mask and I know that from a diver's perspective the adaptation from normal coms to cell coms is ultra simple.
