I'm a Fish!
Hi Docs,
Does anyone know how many cups of coffee would be the equivalent to 40mg caffine alkaloids?
Would taking these pills harm someone scuba diving?
Thanks.

Hi Natasha,

Of course it's never that simple. The mg of caffeine per cup of coffee depends not only on the size of the cup, but the variety of bean, where it was grown, how finely the beans are ground, and the method & length of time used for brewing.

For rough computational purposes, based on a 5 oz cup made from beans of varying potency: The drip method, with fine ground, generally yields the highest amount of caffeine, ranging from 110-150 mg. Percolated ranges from 64-124 mg. Instant coffee is often lower in caffeine, averaging between 40-108 mg.

There you have it.

Best regards.

--Exercise and Caffeine

Caffeine has also been studied for its use as an exercise aid. In a few studies caffeine has been shown to increase an athlete’s overall performance level. Those athletic events which are of moderate intensity have been shown to be aided by the use of caffeine. It mostly affects the athlete’s ability to increase the intensity or duration of exercise. But combined with caffeine’s diuretic effect, an increased level of exercise can lead an athlete to dehydration.
But diving is not really an athletic activity.

So you will dehydratate during diving and might have a lower panic level.

Thank you, everyone. I knew this was the place for all questions to be answered in the quickest amount of time.
I thought 40MG was much more caffine then it actually is.
I'm glad to know it's not as bad as I thought.

Interesting thread. Doc Vikingo, what about those popular energy drinks like Red Bull, Dark Dog, Erectus, etc... ? I understand these are loaded with Caffeine and Sugar, also Taurine.

Assuming you had a late night out with no alcohol, but lots of these caffeine intensive drinks, would diving be harmful? Also, Im not sure you answered the question regarding these pills & diving. I understand that alcohol and diving dont mix well, but does the same apply to caffeine/taurine? THanks.
