Hi,
My wife and I are looking at taking a last minute dive / R&R trip.
First place that comes to mind, with cost in mind is the Yucatan area. Riviera Maya or Cozumel. We like the idea of staying in a cabana/bungalow style place pretty much right on the ocean, with a dive shop near by of course. Any thoughts? I have seen a place called Zamas down by Tulum that looks pretty neat.
Basically we want great diving (coral, walls, caves, swim throughs, variety of sea life...) and a nice relaxing place to enjoy after our dives.

any thoughts or suggestions? Ps we are looking at a Monday through Thursday or Friday time frame, kind of odd days, but...

Tulum is beautiful and offers the atmosphere you're looking for but I don't know about the open water diving there -- it's offered, just don't know anything about it. There's a high concentration of cave & cavern divers there.
Might you consider driving another couple of hours south to Xcalak? Great local diving, the opportunity to day trip to Banco Chinchorro or Belize and a full range of accommodations there.

Just got back from Puerto Adventuras, a marina type place between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. Stayed at a rental house on the water (rocky shoreline). Check out ..VRBO® is Vacation Rentals by Owner® Vacation Homes Rentals by Owner for rental houses and hotel alternatives.

Diving on the Mayan Riviera was OK but not great. However the Cenotes are not to be missed. Dove Dos Ojos and the Bat Cave. Also you can catch a ferry from PDC to Cozumel. Cozumel was still pretty good even after the hurricane. Plancar looked almost untouched while sites further North like Santa Rosa did take a fair beating.

Dove with a Prodive Mexico, pretty good shop all european DM's. Just pay cash they kill you with a horrible exchange rate.
