I will be in CA for two weeks with a weekend off in either Long Beach or Santa Rosa. What are the dive options and where would I be better off spending the weekend if I was interested in diving?

Thanks!

Long Beach has great access to Catalina, a perfect place to spend the weekend diving.
Santa Rosa is a still a distance from Monterey, also great diving. If you decide on Catalina, let us know, maybe we can meet and dive in the park.

At this point the other person on the evaluation team wants to travel north on Friday evening but the bigger issue would be flying after diving - limiting me to Saturday only if I stay in Long Beach, so Santa Rosa is beginning to look like the place I will be over the weekend.

Diving in santa rosa...

Well santa rosa is a bit inland, but there is shore diving on the pacific coast west of there. You will need a car, figure about an hour drive. The water will be low 50s or high 40s. Whether a site is divable will depend on the weather, but generally there are some sheltered spots where you can get a dive in. Good spots are ocean cove, shelter cove, timber cove, salt point and many others. The coast is rocky, and basically anywhere, north of jenner, where you can get to the water safely is divable. Look for rocks off the shore, a good place to park, and a trail to the beach. I have had many great dives along the coast. Do you like kelp??

This is a fairly undeveloped area -- no dive shops after you leave santa rosa. well there used to be a shop along hwy 1 (can't remember where) where you could get ab irons, nets, weights and the like. No fills, bring all the air you will need. There are several sites that describe the sites along the coast, but I don't have any at hand here. I may be able to join you (if you are interested) depending on dates. I can surely provide more info if you need it.
