Thanks to advices on this board I purchased C5050 and PT-015. Unfortunatelly, these days I'll have the oportunity to test it only in my bath tub.

Congrats!

While you're waiting to get it underwater use the time to shoot a lot of pics around the house and outdoors. I've been playing a lot with the custom settings and saving the ones that seem to work the best in the "my mode" settings. Try you hand at the macro and super macro so that you have the hang of it before you get underwater. I've even gone so far as to use the camera actually in the housing so that I'm comfortable with the controls.

Good luck,

Steve

Even though I don't have the 5050 I do the same thing. When I use my camera I use it in the housing to get comfortable with controls. Sorry! i have the 3020 and the pt010. I glad I'm not he only one that does this:)

OK...who else is guilty of using it in the tub? Those pictures are NOT for publication!!!

I guess I won't be posting any of my recent pics then. Oh Well!:)

Sorry! HI DEE!

Last Wednesday I finally got my C5050 and PT-105 wet for the first time.. Joined the LDS in the pool for one of their open water training sessions :) It was a blast, and a very eye opening experience... Even in the (supposedly clean) pool water I got some back scatter on a few wide angle shots.. I left the mode setting on P for starterters.. I tried some super macro shots, but I couldn't hold it steady enough and they turned out fuzzy (which is hard to tell on the LCD... only found out back at home)..
The flash looses its power pretty quickly.. Anything more then 3 ft away and the colours start to disappear somewhat..I really need a strobe.. I just can't afford one..The movie mode is loads of fun under water.. I got some good video clips of people practicing assents :) Next time I'll have to rememeber to turn the sound off.
All in all it was awesome.. I can't wait to try this on my Blackbeard's cruise.. Only thing I'm worried about is the single rinse tank for all the gear :(

It won't matter what kind or how powerful of strobe you get/have, it won't cover more than 3-4ft. Until you get a strobe, if your shot is going to be past 3ft., turn off the internal flash to avaoid the backscatter. ALL water will produce backscatter, some just worse than others!

I'm not sure about the 5050, but on my 4040, there's a green light in the viewfinder...visible without looking THRU the viewfinder. When the shot is in focus, this green light shines steady, if not it blinks. I depend on it and the half-press prefocus thing!

As for the communal rinse tank...don't do it! Most of the camera damage I hear about happens in those tanks. It's better to wrap your camera in a wet towel, doesn't matter if it's wet with salt or fresh water. As long as the camera/housing stays damp, damaging salt crystals can't form. Another solution is to get one of those collapsable beer coolers big enough to hold your rig. Fill it with water after you get on the boat or at the dive site and keep it near you.

I tried that but the camera kept getting in the way of grabbing a beer! :D :D

Sparky- how long were the video clips you took? Did they eat up the memory pretty quick? Glad to hear that you like the camera, still waiting to get mine wet.

Steve
