ssra's right. Digital zoom is the devil! 
It sounds good in all the advertizing hype but it's virtually useless, at least the way use it. You might also want to try manual fucusing. A friend has gotten some amazing results from his camera on super macro settings.
The mose you use won't have anything to do with the focusing but your exposures will be a bit nicer if you choose the aperture and/or shutter speed yourself.
