the mrs and i have bought all of our gear from local dive shops and the last item on the list is a dive computer.

i understand the advantage to buying gear i'll have serviced locally and have done so. But, with these dive computers, i can order them from a site like leisure pro and save over 40% but lose the warranty. I'm not terribly concerned with warranty coverage for a computer costing $900, when i can get it for $600. I'm fine self insuring to save $300 - any of you smarter than me have a comment as to why i shouldn't?

moved this question here...

enjoy the responses!

also, you could try to do a search under "leisurepro." this is
one issue that has generated a lot of discussion.

this thread is a great example:

We are in the same boat here. We have to buy for 3 people. Leisure pro offers such great bargains you have to consider no factory warranty. I am sure if you had a problem with a computer they would fix it. We have bought the suunto vytecs with wireless air transmitters. We have made several "BIG" and expensive purchases from leisure pro and they are great. We have never had any problems with any of the items. I would love to give the business to my LDS but they can't come close to the savings. It might be different buying one, but buying for 2 or 3 you have to look for the lowest prices. Just my two cents worth

A student of mine bought two computer from LP. We met in Bonaire for a couple weeks of diving. One of the computers didn't make it through the first day. Another friend ordered two computers frm LP (different brand) Both of the batteries went south after one week. Another bought a Suunto stinger from LP. The Titanium model, it's supposed to come with a Titanium bracelet AND the rubber strap. LP shipped it without the Titanium bracelet after several conversations and no positive results he shipped it back for a refund, lost the shipping costs. I hate LP. I tell my students and friends to support their LDS if at all possible. Buyer beware -cost of purchase or cost of ownership, which is more important to you

Those who tout the great prices of LP apparently are divers who only dive on vacation. There when the new cheaper priced item takes a dump, they can pay 150% of what the LDS would have charged to replace or repair the LP merchandise. They obviously don't care if there is no place to get an air fill or get their regs serviced.

OK I'll jump in.

I travel a lot so buying on line is sometimes my only option... or so it would seem. A dive shop is a resource. It can be used to give you information, education and specific equipment advice. I try to support my favorite dive shop(s) when I can. I know that if I need to pay a little more for an item I do so willingly because of the advice I have recieved from my local shop. My solution is that I do have a continuing relationship with 2 particular dive shops. One in Los Angeles where I have purchased some expensive gear and the other in my new home town in Virginia where I can send my regulators home to my wife and she will take them in for service.

At the shop in L A, I am on a first name basis with the owner and when I need somthing like a new dive light (a situation I am in right now), I call him up on the phone and let him know what I am after and he takes care of me. Sure Leisure Pro is cheaper on the specific item, but the owner of the shop in L A can and will give me specific advice about somthing as simple as a light. This interaction has value, and I am willing to pay for the service, I turst his opinion and he is familiar with my experience level and personal diving style.

The shop in Virginia is a small shop but good, and they are an authorized repair center for my brand of regulator, while the shop in L A is not. Again I have spoken with the owner and he is doing an overhaul on one of my regulators right now. I have been happy with his work in the past and I fully expect that I will continue to be happy with it in the future.

The key to both of these shops is communication. These shops are both smaller family run shops where I feel comfortable when I walk in. I have seen lots of the larger shops where the profit is more important than telling the customer not to get that piece of junk.

If you are happy with your local dive shop, by all means keep doing business there. Yes, you might spend a little more money now but in the long run they will be a resource from which you will get more than you put in. If your local dive shop is a good shop but they do not sell a particular brand of computer, ask them where a good shop that does sell this brand is located. If they are worth their salt they will be comfortable telling you and letting you get gear you are happy with. No dive shop can carry every brand of everything.

I understand that money is important Wal-Mart is very popular but I don't shop there when I have a choice, and I choose not to shop at the Wal-Mart of SCUBA stores either.

That is my opinion and I sign with my name,

Mark Vlahos

H2Andy has a good point. You will see lots of people's opinion on this issue elsewhere in this board. Just do a search. With that in mind, people who are new to the board should still have their say if they want to. Since I've stated my opinion elsewhere, I'll keep quiet in this thread. Errr, ummm, other than what I just said. Lots of people will appreciate that. ;) Good idea, no?

I buy everything from my LDS. We went there for training, all our equipment and all our extras (except cameras). We are on a first name basis with the shop owner and have always gotten prompt service and great advice. This is the only dive shop in our area and if they don't stay in business, then what? My wife and I believe in supporting local business. (this does not mean my local chain, just privately owned local business.

Have never bought scuba gear online. If you don’t get the warranty with the product no way! Especially with computers. I had problems with a computer and the LDS did a great job of making sure I got a new one in a timely manner. If you need to save money just wait until you need to buy several items and ask for a discount. I know this is not the standard in the USA, but they have sales right? I have never had them not take at least 20% off.

Well you should talk to your local dive shop about the price... He should come down a little---If you are happy with the LDS stick to them... Imagine if that were the only dive shop in your area--how would you feel if they went belly up--- How would you get your air? Are you planning on taking an AOW class on-line? No, oh ya that's right you can't... You trusted your local dive shop to train you to stay alive underwater, so in other words you trusted them with your life, so why cant you trust them with your wallet!
Can I ask where you got the advice on what computer to buy? I bet it was the LDS... So now you are going to buy the computer that they adviced you to get from a computer? How do you think that will make your LDS feel? Do you really think that they will support you, when you dont support them?
I am comming at you from an instructors stand point. I know I feel like crap when I spend so much time helping my students, giving my "expert" advice on the matter and watch them buy it from the internet... I feel used when that happens---Do you think I call those people after they have been certified to ask if they want to go diving? Hell no, they dont support me, so why should I support them....
If the shop has earned it, give it! If you dont want to support y0our dive shop like some of these knockle heads on these boards then you should:
learn how to service your regs, change the batteries on your computer, sevice your BCD, learn how to fix your dry-suit/ wet suit, and learn how to mix your own gas, oh ya teach yourself all the spiecalty classes, and fill your cylinders!

It must be suck to know that the only support you can get is by sending your life support equipment to some service shop out of town.
