hey guys just getting ready to start getting outfitted I am wondering what kind of order you usually go in when buying?? I am thinking about getting my wet suit first then BC after that I dunno. Im kinda clueless on what to get though I kinda didnt my open water with the best gear. Seaquest pro qd BC and the aqua lung legend. Any advice though would greatly be appreciated. thank you

I broke down and got a package deal from my LDS as well as everthing else I needed. Now I don't have to worry about renting equipment and am free to dive when I want all be it that I have air in the tank.

Note: I did have some money set aside when I bought and so It would depend on your budget as to what you buy first and how many items.

I was told though to get the reg first.

Soft Gear (Fins, Mask, Wetsuit, Booties etc)

Then hard gear, reg or bcd although usually you get the low pressure inflator hose when you buy your bcd so if you get the reg first you will probably have to buy one and then you'll have a spare when you buy your bcd.

So I'd get soft gear then save and buy all hard gear at once.

Don't bother with tanks until much later most places include them with boat dives and you can't travel with them so...

Your plan is a good one. Wet suits rent daily around here for $10-$12, and you can buy one, 3mm, for under a hundred. Ownership pays off quickly there. You can do the math on other items. Think about computers, if you feel ready for one. Unless you rent the same model each time, you will have to learn how to set up and use each one. Dive computers are "less alike" than other dive gear items.

Happy diving!

I just took it all the way and asked my instructor what gear hed recommend me to buy, If I wanted to buy a complete set, with a drysuit and a computer.
2-2,5k USD later I have a set of gear thats never been used (before i got it. Let me assure you I use it whenever I have the chance) and seems to be good performance for the bucks i put into it. Im in Norway, I guess buying the same gear in the US would cost less than here..

you really should get your own wetsuit and find one that fits really really nice!

otherwise, everybody else is spot on. after the basics everything sort of has to come at once, (bc, regs, gauges...). do lots of reading to find what you want though! don't just buy the 'package' at your LDS.

mask, fins, snorkel, then wetsuits.

Regs and bcd and guages all pretty much have to come togethor becuase they're all attached to each other.

Drysuit last.

best advice: spend the money to get something good the first time. I'm a huge cheapskate and it keeps biting me in the butt with scuba gear. I'm so frustrated with a few pieces of my gear that the fact that I saved easily $700-1k overall doesn't matter. It's such a pain in the butt to not get good equipment. Get good stuff from you dive shop. But dn't let them overcharge you: bring in quotes from the internet and other stores and talk them down in price. Don't make them match internet prices necessaily, but say "hey, you are $500 more. Can you bring it down to $100 more?" Becuase that relationship with a local guy is important.
