A 24-year-old man is missing in the murky depths of Coquitlam's Buntzen Lake. Rescue crews received the page at 1:30am and are in Stage One of the search, where they are looking for a conscious and responsive subject. However, the man had been missing for several hours before it was noticed. Crews initially thought they were looking for a hiker, but it turns out the missing man is a well experienced free diver. He was even working towards trying out for the olympic team. Right now there are dozens of searchers combing the shore and calling his name. A dog team and three boats are also involved. An RCMP helicopter will be brought in when it gets light.

Body recovered from Buntzen Lake
August 29, 2005 - 5:46 pm

Coquitlam RCMP are confirming the body of Erik Bezur has been found today in Buntzen Lake. Dive teams recovered the body from the water around four this afternoon. Bezur was reported missing yesterday. The 24 year old spent the day fishing at the lake. He called his family around 4:30 to say he was going to be late. He wanted to practice diving. Bezur is an experienced free diver who had hopes of competing in the Olympics.

That's really unfortunate. Good work to the people involved in the SAR operation.
