Just back from a dive trip. One of the divemasters from England had bungeed his single tank wing. He said he liked it, very compact and vented well. Anybody with experience/comments on this ?

If he had the right sized wing he would not need a bungy to keep it compact. Most likely he has a wing that is too big for the purpose its being used or it is poorly designed.

+1 on that

I have seen a few people that used an OMS 94 lb wing on a single tank.

As long as the wing isn't oversized and he isn't in any overheads, it should fine. Many of the reasons cited against bungies don't hold up to careful scrutiny, or only apply in overheads or areas with high entanglement hazards. If they were as big a death trap as some would have you believe there would be dozens of deaths in the northern half of the US every year due to them.

Myself, I had one early on (~5 dives after OW) and quite enjoyed it. Currently, I dive wings without bungies, and don't notice an appreciable difference, other than having to remind myself that I need to get back to proper trim before I can dump air as well. I should mention that I'm occasionally out of trim to get my camera into the best location for a shot.

I don't think there are enough reasons for a bungied wing, but I don't agree with many reasons that are said t be against it. Better than a jacket BC, but not better than a non-bungied wing.

.... now I get to wait for the personal attacks for not following the cave diving hurd...

If you have a properly sized wing, bungies just aren't necessary. In the unlikely event of getting a hole in your wing, bungies will make it difficult for the wing to hold any air -- this is unlike an unbungied wing, where getting in the right attitude will make it possible to hold some gas. This effect is REAL, and some friends of mine were present when a diver with a bungied wing had his OPV cover come off and he was unable to maintain neutral buoyancy. A bungied wing doesn't have a smooth surface, so it increases drag in the water (which probably isn't a big deal, if you're in a single tank and not swimming into current).

They aren't "bungied wings of death", but they simply don't offer a significant advantage over a properly sized wing, and do offer some real disadvantages.

I'll agree that a large hole or OPV loss can be a problem. It's also the case that some bungied wings don't have a smooth surface, but some are designed so that the wing surface away from the diver is smooth. These are the wings where the bungies pull together the surface of the wing closes to the diver, leaving the surface away from the diver smooth. If I recall, Hollis BAC wings do this as well as some wings intended for sidemount.

I have a DR Trek wing that I use for single tank/non overhead diving. It is not bungied when I use a steel 95 tank but I find it works best if I bungie it with an AL80. I have never had any issues with either. The bungie is on the back of the wing - next to my back. If the bungie wrapped around the front and the back of the wing, I probably would not use it.
