Thanks very much for the replies. I knew it had to be something other than what I imagined. I'll head on down to the local do-it-yourself store and check out their bungee selection. Also, thanks for clearing up the octopus/backup distinction for me. I hadn't thought of that at all. Better to know now than to discover the difference during an emergency!

Here is my question, Can you go with the bungeed backup with a standard or slightly longer primary hose?

I ask this because I have read through many of these threads about the bungeed backup with a 7' primary and the short hose with a bungeed backup sounds very interesting. I agree with all of the arguements I have read about why it makes more sense.

Having said that, I don't like the idea of a long primary hose. I have no desire to do any wreck diving or overhead situations where I would need for the full length of a 7' hose, so why have it? Actually it is more than that, I don't want to deal with the routing, I like the standard length.

So I guess, do you feel it would be a safe (for my buddy) configuration for me to go with a standard hose on my primary and a short bungeed on my backup?

Your primary will be the one donated in an OOA situation so it needs to be at least the standard octo hose length of 36" which is too long to have looped over your shoulder and too short to bring up under your right arm.... therefore.... the hose you want is 40".

That is just what I was looking for.
