After 30 years of diving 99% of my Buddy's have been men, it is only in the past couple of years that I have had the pleasure of diving with women AND ITS GREAT. Easy to get along with no macho crap take the dive seriously but not them selfs.
How do others feel about buddy pairing.
DUCKING
Back to the original question.
When I'm on vacation I'm at the mercy of the "Dive Buddy Gods" so it doesn't really matter to me as long as they dive safely. In the past if I have gotten buddied up with a good diver I ask when they are diving next and try to hook up with them again. If I don't like the way they dive I look for another buddy next dive.

In all honesty I haven't had much of a chance to dive with um...numerous dive buddies. I agree with cobaltbabe that women do tend to use less air (contrairy to popular belief of most men...no insult intended)....anyway....I've been told I do have a problem with my position next to my buddy...oh man I'm gonna get it for this one...but seriously .... never mind I just can't .... it's killing me.....

Actually that is a problem with my GF as a buddy, she is just behind and above me. I slow down, she slows down, unless i turned around and swam behind her very quickly i dont think i could get her next to me - i keep mentioning to her, but this is another thread - just wondering if that is the position that starfish keeps on getting grief about? BTW, others also sometimes do that, some just stay next to me riding side by side - i prefer that. We are all moving at the same pace, but looking behind and slightly above does become a pain. ;)

yup....but I'm a little below....no reason really....just not a fast swimmer and like to look around. I always keep buddy real close (within arms reach) but when I swim right next to someone I end up getting too close and bumping arms or something....I have a habit of doing that when I walk with someone too.

I think the reason women use less air is that when they are on land they are always exercising their lungs, once they get under water and take a breath they don't waste it by nagging! Ha Ha I just couldn't resist, no harm intended.

Actually behind and slightly below i could deal with, and they could see me ahead and above. As for bumping into people underwater or above - do you get drawn into something by your peripheral vision or something? Occasionally i do that, mostly cos i am off in a dreamworld at the time.

BTW, we stay fairly close, less than a breath away, i dont shoot off or anything and that isnt why some people seem to lag, as hard as i try to be next to them, they just dont want it - do i smell underwater or something  ?? Other people seem to drift alongside me perfectly well.

i agree with you on this as long as they dive safely. i know both women and man who are disaster so i don't think the gender matter. For myself i like diving with both and i think that is what make diving fun.

have a great diving season

I dive to the left of Matt. Usually a little ways away but the last dive we were holding hands and all of a sudden my reg started to pull out of my mouth (no he wasn't trying to kill me, yet!) so I looked over and my hose was wrapped around his valves. How's that for close? I took my reg out, got untangled and pushed him away. I don't think he has a clue what happened.

That is close. Sheila and I normally hold hands too, if we are just cruising, but still stay within a one kick distance.

From the pairings I've had, both women and men buddies were ok, but I do prefer diving with my wife. We both tend to move at the same pace so it is more comfortable.
