Newly certified diver and I went on my 5th and 6th dives recently. Logged dives in dive log afterward, but forgot to have my buddy sign my log. I was just wondering if it is really neccessary to have my buddy sign my log after every dive. After I think about it, all the other divers in our group logged their dives, but no one was signing eachother's logs.

The reason I ask is because I may want to go for the PADI Master Scuba Diver status eventually, will they count these "unsigned" dives toward the 50 required dives or do you need a buddy's signature for them to count? Does anyone really look that closely at your dive log?

I wouldnt worry about it. I am sure there are not many instructors out there that will hold it against you. Of my 400 or so dives the only signatures I have were from Instructors on dives I completed for classes.

No biggie. It's your log, if you want them to sign it I'm sure they will but it will not discount your dives when going for other certs requiring them.

for the most part dive logs are for you, not for others, in rare occasions you will have to prove your dives. ie. Divemaster. rarely will a dive operator ask for them, generally they care more about your certs.

I generally only log new dive sites that I want to remember for some reason, ie found a better way in/out, found certain rare fish, or other things that I would like to remember

I got my log signed up until I got my AOW certification, after that I usually only get them signed if I dive with someone new, or if I happen to be filling it out, and the person is there..."here, sign this"

The main reason I wanted signatures then was in case I was going to do an advanced dive where they wanted to see what my experience was before agreeing to let me go, I wanted to show that they WERE verified...

At home since I primarily dive with the same group of people I don't usually get it signed.

I log every dive, but only have dives signed for specific reasons. IE a class, my instructor signs, I go on a trip and meet someone interesting, I have them sign. One day if I meet someone famous on a dive boat I'll have them sign, that sort of thing.

I do not believe that unsigned dives don't count, only unlogged ones...

I log and have my buddy sign all my dives. It's not necessary to have them signed, many people keep computer logs rather than paper logs and you can't really have a buddy sign those. I just like to have the signatures, besides you never know when someone might become famous and you have the signature to prove you dove with them :D

The first log book I used mostly has the dives co-signed by my buddies. I then switched to electronic logging. I use a sensus ultra now with paper backups (basically transcribe the sensus log into a ring binder). I have not had a buddy co-sign in a few years now. I have no professional dive intentions, so ymmv.
