I just don't log dives
I forgot to mention in this lake or actually chain of 3 lakes, there is supposed to be a train burried under the silt up in the third lake. Apparently the train tressel collapsed with the train on it, and it fell into the lake. As far as I know there has never been much intrest or knowledge of what is or was there. Everyone in the area seems to know, back in the 1800's a logging train went in but no one seems to know where for sure or even care, supposing there isn't any real value in a logging train. And since there ar no tracks left from over a hundred years ago anyway...

I'm told my uncle (hopeing to be able to salvage I guess) the train supposedly hired a couple of divers I believe in the late 70's or early 80's to go down and see if they could find it. He had found some reminants of pilings pretty much the middle of no where and in a wooded area on the shore (there are no houses or cabins in this area, mostly swampy) and followed the direction out I guess, I'm not clear on this point because the tressel had apparently gone over much of the shallow lake. Well I'm told the vis was pretty bad but apparently they were able to see the bell but thy reported the train was indeed buried way under the silty bottom.

I'm thinking of asking him where exactly it was so when I've got a lot more experience I might try to see if anything still remains sticking out of the muck, butafter all this time, I'm probably out of luck.

Scott,

Can you see any evidence of remnants of the RR grade around the lake ? Quite often while deer or turkey hunting we'll notice old RR grades but I never realized what they were until a friend pointed one out.

You may be able to find old newspaper reports, maps, court records, etc. If a train fell in, there's probably an insurance claim. Or contacting the companies involved in the loss? Knowing something about the wreck's history makes it so much more interesting to dive.

Thank you for your reply;

Honestly I don't know, I personally haven't looked. It was my uncle who did the leg work when I was a kid, he said there was, that is how he found it, but we're talking oer 30 years ago now so... who knows. He is very well into his 70's but next time I see him I'll try to get more info. It's kind of funny, I was very interested when I was a kid, but I had forgotten all about it until I wrote the other post about the burnt mill, and it was like a light bulb switching on. Me thinks this might be a few fun trips next summer...
