Diver dies soon after surfacing
A British diver has died at Gozo hospital after losing consciousness soon after surfacing.

The police said on Sunday the woman, 43 had been diving with a group off Xatt l-Aħmar near Għajnsielem in Gozo on Saturday afternoon.

She surfaced and lost consciousness on the boat.

The woman was given first aid and rushed to Gozo hospital, where she passed away.

A magisterial inquiry is under way.

Xatt l-Aħmar is a popular dive site, featuring three deep water wrecks, the MV Cominoland, MV Karwela and MV Xlendi as well as a wall reef with caves.

Any idea of how deep those wrecks and wall are?

MV Karwela wreck is about 50 m long and is sitting perfectly upright on a sandy bottom with a maximum depth around 40 m. Her bow lies at 39 m deep, whereas her stern rests at 41 m. The top deck with the captains cabin starts at depth of 30 m. The wreck is safe to penetrate because of the various openings made before scuttling

MV Xlendi wreck is around 80 m long and lies on a sandy slope about 42 m deep on the shore side and 44 m on the sea side. The shallowest point are the propellers, one on each end, at approximately 32 m. Wreck penetration is not recommended due to its very unstable and unsafe condition upside down

MV Cominoland wreck is about 35 m long and sits in a perfectly upright position on a sandy seabed with a maximum depth around 40 m. The wreck has two decks which offer plenty of potential for exploration, and is safe to penetrate because of the various openings cut before scuttling. The wreck starts at 32 m with the deck at 35 m and her bows in 39 m depth
