On Thursday 8 January, all British divers were banned from diving the wreck of HMS Hood. This is one of the most popular training wrecks in the south of England, and one used when the weather is not so good.

We would like you to add your support to a petition to allow us to dive this wreck once again. The petition may be found here.

Full details of the ban, and links to further information on the wreck are here.

Lets hope that we can get this ban lifted, you never know when you might want to be here on holiday and dive the Hood.

Notice from banning authority.

Why where you banned from diving this wreck?

Why where you banned from diving this wreck?

I have added a couple of links to my original post.

The banning authority cites progressive collapse of the wreck. This is the case of all wrecks. There are also several other wrecks within the port. The Hood was deliberately sunk as a block ship to prevent U boat attack in WW1.

and the justification they gave is bad how?

It would seem that they are (or at least the perception is) looking out for the well being and safety of divers. I understand that we are all responsible for our own actions but most divers are not aware of the structural wellness of a wreck (other then it being a wreck). What is your goal?

From the UK discussion forum, it appears that some folks claim that the "diver safety" argument is just spin doctoring, and the real motivation is something else--like money that could be derived from changing the harbor to something more profitable.

WRONG

Safety...maybe.

Terrorists trying to possibly operate thru civilian dive operators to infil YOUR country...most likely.

It sounds like the ban is justfied on safety grounds Adrian. When/if it caves in on someone wouldn't you feel terrible?

R..

Um, no. I signed a petition to sink the Spiegel Grove and people have died on that, I don't feel bad (responsible) for trying to sink it. People die on state protected sites in Florida, I don't feel bad (responsible) for the protection either. People are responsible for themselves regardless of where they dive, divers on this wreck should be, and I'm sure are, aware of the dangers.
