Anyone ever read the book "Understanding Comics?" The author (Scott McCloud) explains how sometimes a simpler, more iconic image can be more expressive than a more detailed, specific image. That may be what's going on here.

Feeling you. Haven't read the book, but I totally get what you're saying.
Not a fan of the hyper-realistic smilies that are all over the net. The shaded, color fade, super expressive, cap wearing, sound enhanced animated nonsense.
These aren't that. These are sort of in-between the yellow 2-d crayon work and the airbrushed Anime stuff.
