I'm looking into a primary and secondary light set... Any suggestions on size/brand? I need some bright light :mean: but dont need to spend UK light cannon bucks... What about weight vs intensity/longevity?

I dive with a UK C8, and an SL4. They are making a rechargable battery kit for the C8, and I'd either get that, or a couple sets of ray-o-vac rechargables. The C8 throws plenty of light, and I get about two hours out of a battery set.

I also have a couple of their Mini Q40's, one for a 'back-up-back-up', and one I use as a headlamp on my mask strap.

I also use a C8, backed up by an SL6. They are good lights for the money, and the C8 has two filaments that you can switch between underwater. The SL6 is a little bulkier than the SL4, but throws a beam almost as bright as the primary. It's great on day dives for investigating those nooks and crannies.

I generally use a UK D8 and an SL4 as a backup also. I've got an old DiveRite that I have carried for about 500 dives and it still works every time. I use it for those under the rock and in the nooks things.
The D8 is a big brute and is only carried for the real night dives.

I haven't started doing night dives yet, but I had a dive that ended when it was dusk, almost dark. I was the only one that thought to bring a light and towards the end of the dive, when it was getting dark, everyone was following me. The light I was using is a UK mini Q40 eLED. Very nice light, very bright also.

I too was looking for a compromise between cost and effectivness, ended up with the UK C8 (can change the bulbs to different watt ratings too) and the UK MiniQ-40 (small, very bright, keep it in my BC pocket)

I got mine at UnrealFind , UK C8 ... http://www.unrealfind.com/Merchant2...PROD&Product_Code=light1&Category_Code=lights
and the Mini Q40 ... http://www.unrealfind.com/Merchant2...PROD&Product_Code=light2&Category_Code=lights
I have visited them, nice people, good price

Another vote for the UK C8 ... for the money it's a great light. The rechargable version (UK C8R) comes with one bulb that's more powerful than the other ... while the non-rechargable version comes with two bulbs of the same (lower) rating.

For a backup, the UK SL4 is a good light. I prefer the Ikelite PCLite ... the beam is a bit more focused and makes a good light for day diving when you just want a light to look under rocks in into holes.

I dive with a UK D4 and an SL4 for backup. I'm very happy with both lights.

I recently upgraded the D4 with 7500 mAH NiMH rechargable batteries and the D4R 18W bulb. It's much brighter now.

Originally almost purchased a C8eLED, but I ended up getting the D4 because it has a lantern grip.

i have a light cannon, but if i didn't i'd be getting the c8 eled, seen one next to mine once and was very impressed...

I typically recommend the UK C8 or C8 LED for a primary and the Pelican Super Saber, UK SL 6, or the Dive Rite LED for a back up. I know that many people feel that the SL 6 is too much for a back up, but I personally use 2 of them to back up my 10W HID canister light.
