How come there aren't any brew pubs in Coz? Or for that matter why no micro brews? I live in the Pacific NW where we can't seem to get enough of them when they are seemingly on every block. I suspect a brewpub in Coz would be a huge hit.

Are the import or legal regulations to prohibitive for a brew pub business?

LA International almost across from Mega has like 200 different beers and lots from throughout Mexico.

I think this would be a good reason to go down to the Pub tomorrow and ask Chris. I think it might be due to exclusivity agreements with the existing distributors, something like 'you will only serve our brands of beer or be excluded from our products all together', but I am speculating.

Doubt it. LA International has lots of Mexican brands, probably 100+ and from micro breweries. I know they won't sell SOL vs Corona at same retailer because of agreements.

Few have any idea how difficult it is to start ANY business in Mexico. I'd never try something out of the ordinary because someone, or some organization will kill you or your efforts..

There's this place on the mainland -- 5th just south of 38th. You could sit there for weeks and not sample everything, unless sample was all you did.

From a reviewer:

They have about 75 beers on the menu and 25 in rotation. About 60% of their beers are also from Mexico and can give visitors to Playa Del Carmen a great opportunity to taste many beers that you cannot taste outside of Mexico. Many of the Mexican beers come from Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterey and Baja, Mexico. They have two local made beers on tap, the Akumal pale ale and Mundo Maya IPA “The Warrior”.

With a very cold Bohemia Obscura....why would you need anything else? Lol... Man I love that beer.....

Seriously though, if your question is about you personally starting a brew pub, I know there are restrictions on foreigners owning businesses in Mexico, as well as foreigners working in Mexico or even owning property in Mexico. Obviously, these obstacles can be overcome through Mexican majority partners, trusts managed by Mexican banks, forming a Mexican corporation, obtaining permanent resident status, and probably several other options as well.

I have spent some time trying to figure out how to live and work in Cozumel once my youngest is on her own. I know just enough to know there are obstacles, so I'm sure if your question was directed towards you starting a brew pub, there are lots of more qualified people on this site that have already gone through the steps to start their businesses.

If your question was more along the lines of why no brew pubs exist in Coz, all you need for me is an never ending supply of Bohemia Obscura....perhaps a few cans of Clamato or Zing Zang Bloody Mary mix, worchestsire, and Tabasco for a bloody beer every now and then. Christian's Mojito at The Thirsty Cougar would be my second drink choice.

Good luck, I will happily drink a Bohemia Obscura at your new venture when it gets off the ground!

Safe travels,
Jay

A couple of cases of Bohemia Obscura are definatally on the shopping list when we go down in October.
