You mean they are going back to the old twin hose style? Sure this isn't due to budget cuts versus new technology?

Maybe the Coast Guard, nut so far the USN is still getting a few bucks.
There's a "new" version of the USD double hose out that the Navy uses to do their rebreather training, sorta like a "dive simulator". The critters are produced solely for the Navy though, very few have managed to slip out through the cracks. ;)

I've heard news that the navy has been testing it and liquid air technology shown in the Abyss does in fact exist. It would often be tested by flooding one lung of volunteer (or victim) with liquid goo. Besides the fact that it does work there are alot of problems including fact that it takes more effort to breath liquid rather than air through lungs. I wouldn't be up for testing this; would rather breathe air rather than liquid.

Did read this in Wired magazine last week. http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.08/pwr_superpower_pr.html (goto: "07 * UNDERWATER BREATHING"). This I would definetly be interested in! Being able to stay underwater indefinetly without tank and equipment would be great. Uses silicon strands to filter oxygen out of water into breatheable air. I guess the only down side would be if water were dirty with trash, dead stuff, or sewage the air would probably taste the same way!

BTW: Where can I find the Abyss: Special Edition? You mentioned you had bought it a week or so ago and that it includes alot of special features including audio commentary. Can't seem to find it on Amazon - only existing special edition which has been out for a few years.

I got the abyss special edition dvd the other day. interesting to note, that on his last dive, they stopped counting the depth at 18,000 feet.

I wonder if that's possible. I've read that the breathable liquid is true, just not used since it's simply beyond dangerous. and plus 18,000 feet! think of the headache!

The real problem with breathing liquid oxygen is getting the liquid OUT of your lungs again when you are back on the surface

I remember reading that it actually evaporates very quickly.

I've read a few articles about this, and they've all pretty much summarily said that it does NOT quite work like that. (From what I've read) the only real application of this type of technology so far is medical... and in those cases the lungs only get partially filled (25% is "extreme" if I remember). One of the major problems is getting rid of CO2 out as opposed to getting O2 in.

If I'm wrong, I'd love to hear about someone who actually breathed pure liquid for any length of time at all. I think that's cool as all get out.

I bought the dvd at best buy, I had a hard time finding it also, and was surprised to have found it at a big store considering I didn't find it online.

if anyone has breathed liquid o2, they probably would be either dead, or "it's classified." because everyone knows there's a really deep dive record out there held by a navy diver, would love to find that out sometime. now just think of some of the other stuff they came up with, with all that funding.

No one ever said liquid O2. There are O2 carrying liquids that have been used for many years as a breathing medium in the medical field.

Another big problem I thought of was ear clearing. If there's no air in your respiratory system, does that mean your inner ears would also fill with fluid? Up the eustachian tube you go?

Navy probably already has underwater navy bases and cities, which comes complete with minisubs and nuclear sub refueling bases. The underwater deep drilling rig in the Abyss is probably nothing compared to what's available now. At least it would be really cool if this were all true.
