Abby,

Call DAN's number for diving emergencies: 1/919/684-4326
I don't think you'll be on hold for 45 minutes there!

Your friend may have said "patent foramen ovale", but you should
be putting your attention on your current chest pain...

There's a fairly high number of people with pfo, and it is
suspected that divers who have it may be more susceptible to
DCS. The test for it, I believe, is an echocardiogram.
BUT THIS IS NOT YOUR IMMEDIATE PROBLEM!!
YOUR CHEST PAIN IS!! CALL DAN!!

Abby,

Don't Phone DAN.

As you are in the UK this will be a VERY expensive call, there is the Diving Diseases Research Centre that you can call, I will look up their number for you, and also, it is probably worth contacting Dr Peter Wilmshurst the BSAC medical specialist - both are in the UK, and will have as much information available as DAN will have - plus when you speak English they will understand you. (Dan Europe mainly speak German IF I remember correctly)

If I get the chance I will find both numbers for you today.

Your all great!

I got the pains again this morning so I made an emergency appointment at my doctors.

Went round there at 9.30 - finally saw him at 10.30 and he examined me etc. Checked my breathing and heart. My bpm was a tad higher than normal but he believes the problem is actually the fact i have damaged the join between my ribs and my sturnom! Painful, but not dive threatening!!!!!

Thanx one and all for your input - your all brilliant!!!

Abby

Glad to hear it was nothing life-threatening. I know it is disagreeable enough, but nothing to stop you from diving which is the main thing :)

Get well soon.

I've just read thru this entire thread. What frightens me is the length of time that passed brtween scubababy's first post and her appointment with her doctor - a week!!!! I guess we can say that if it WAS anything really serious, she would have been in a lot of trouble a lot earlier.

When will divers realise that in suspected diving injuries you seek medical assistance FIRST and discuss it with others later? Why wait until it gets serious? In case it's OK and we've wasted their time and caused ourselves a little embarrasment? Cross, not Tick!
