DENNISDIVES:
Anyone have any details on what happened at the Breakwater on 11/20/05.

It was at the far end of the beach. EMT was there. I heard it was an unconscious diver.

Dennis

I don't know too much about the incident, but I did see what happened after the Fire & Rescue arrived. When I got up to the rail they were all crowded around a woman and putting her on a backboard. The good thing was she must have had a pulse and been breathing on her own because they were not giving her chest compressions. I then heard some coughing and the EMT yelled to turn the backboard on its side so she wouldn't choke, so it looked like she was coughing up some of the water she had inhaled. I sure hope she is ok. I tried searching the Herald and the local TV websites but turned up nothing.

It was kind of scary for me to hear the sirens yesterday because my 12 year old daughter was getting certified and my son and I had walked down the cannery row to get some fresh cinnimon rolls. On the way back was when we got passed by the ambulance and heard all the sirens... I had to keep reminding myself that my daughter's class couldn't have gotten suited up and in the water that fast for it to be her that needed rescue!!

I saw something on the news last night about a diver who got in trouble during her certification dives.

The diver, a teacher who appeared to be in her 40s or 50s, had removed her reg and was trying to reinsert it when she inadvertantly inhaled water. She claims that the reg was some how stuck on her mask. She immediately signaled to her instructor that she wanted to surface.

The rest of the story depends on who is telling it. The diver claims that she doesn't remember much but was told by her instructor and fellow students that everyone surfaced but her. The dive master was asked to go and search for the missing diver who was ultimately found unconscious at between 15-25 ft of water. The diver is implying that she was told that she was left submerged and in distress for a period of anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes.

The version told by the LDS who apparently was providing the instruction (Diver Dan's) is that after inhaling water, the diver panicked and was assisted to the surface by the instructor/dive master. She was then immediately taken ashore for treatment.

The diver was kept in the hospital for 2 days and was later released "undiagnosed". She seemed reasonably lucid and seemed unaffected after her ordeal.

I'm not a certified diver yet and I'm not trying to be a monday morning quarterback, but according to the ktvu news story it sounded like she maybe panicked. Does anybody have any experience, opinions or info on Diver Dan's. I'm looking for a scuba school and they are only a few blocks from me. I read a few posts on here and some people said to stay away but never listed any specifics. The news did not really make it sound like Diver Dans was a bad place and as a matter of fact, the story did not have much of a point other than the bad situation that this lady unfortunately got into. Any info/recomendations would be appreciated. Thankyou.

I'm a divemaster at Diver Dan's. They have an extensive instructor list so there will be an open water class when you are ready to take it. PM "WileEDiver" on this board, he's an excellent instructor from Diver Dan's.
