Wow. I know people that managed to get stung pretty seriously, one was on a tech dive and had a lot of deco to go before he could even think about treating it. Some of his fingers were partially paralyzed for a few months. I had no idea they could be lethal. I was always super careful when I was hunting and prepping them to eat.

Every accident is a chain of events and not a single cause. There are millions of lionfish stings worldwide every year (I've had at least a hundred). A fatality is extremely rare and usually with contributing factors. I don't think all the details have been published on this accident.

You and I may have had this discussion before. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean that you should speak for everyone.

As for your resistance to severe reaction to the stings, you probably shouldn't keep counting on that.
 
Most likely allergic to venom and died from anaphylaxis.
Seems like it. Also important to note that lionfish only recently have invades northern Brasil and probably not everyone is aware of the danger they pose.

Autopsies are underway, but results should take 30-60 days
