Hi.
Read somewhere filling stations may be picky on what tanks they accept to fill.
Is it a known issue or just suspected, or playing safe ?

Which brands, models, alloys, years to avoid when buying used tanks ?

Keep them after 1990 and few will give you trouble with fills. Catalinas never used the "bad" alloy but you may have trouble getting one filled if it is older than 1990, just because.

steel tanks of any vintage are fine if they are clean and undamaged. rust is the main concern, so popping them open and taking a look inside is key. the 1/2 inch neck lp72s or the 7/8 neck hp tanks get a tad annoying when trying to get new valves though.

for aluminum stick to 6061 tanks (luxfer after 1989, catalina anytime).

The stickey at the top of this forum gives a lot of information about the "bad alloy" tanks and other tank information you might find interesting.
