don't lower youself to that level. Perhaps one day we'll posses the wisdom he's attained. Obviously you didn't learn anything from those thousand + dives you have. :D

yeap im just a dumb stroke dont listen to me, ill prolly be dead soon anyway

California Diver:
im just saying its always better to have a redundant air supply no matter how deep your going, if you and your buddy both have single 80s at a 100 ft and lets say you have a catastrophic reg failure towards the end of your dive i doubt your buddy will have enough gas for both of you to make it to the surface. plus trim is much better with doubles, you dont always need to dive a big set of doubles, get a right set of tanks for the job!

I believe this comment reveals your need to learn some principles of gas management and dive planning.

Oh...yah...if you have the time, I'd be more than glad to teach you how to attain perfect trim with singles...it's not hard... :D

Sorry...couldn't restrain myself from returning the opening salvo. ;)

sthephen sorry for comig off like a jerk i thought you were tryng make fun of me :1poke:

yes i suppose you are right kimber, singles arent exactly as unsafe as i made them out to be, but ill stick to diving my little sets of doubles even when diving with someone on a single makes me feel more comfortable knowing i have plenty of gas for both of us and if i have a problem and i cant get to my buddy in time i still have something to fall back on, i guess a 3rd chance

There is nothing wrong with diving doubles even on rec dives -- if you have the skills and presence of mind to do so. I will take my double 85s out on the boat and use them for 2 recreational dives instead of using the boats AL80s. I like diving doubles for a number of reasons - and ok maybe I am lazy -- while everybody else on the boat is changing tanks -- I am relaxing eating Twinkees and hot cocoa!

That said - single tanks are not dangerous and for the "average diver" probably a safer choice. Remember I work on boats and see the "average diver" more than most people do.

Oh yah -- and your mom?!?!? I'm old but not *that* old! Sheesh thanks! (-;

you're right, proper gas management is the key here. The real problem, as eluded to by another poster, too many divers don't know anything.. ANYTHING about gas management. As to doubles, they're great if one knows how to dive 'em, but not really needed for many kinds of dives. I personally know people who dive doubles who have no business doing so. They're an accident waiting to happen.

Well - he is right -- many divers don't know crap about gas management -- they are taught - surface with at least 500psi and they never learn more than that.

As much as I debate this now -- I :07: my doubles (all 4 sets) and pretty much only dive singles when I am DMing on the boats or Shark Diving.

I dive singles with PST E8-119's.
I use a stainless steel back plate and STA made by "The Kraken's Forge" :D in conjunction with either a Dive Rite "Venture" or "Rec" wing and a Dive Rite 16# weight pocket system.

I dive this system both wet and dry.

After diving doubles almost exclusively for a few years I broke apart my LP 120s last month. I've been making a lot of beach dives lately and the 128 pounds on my back was beginning to feel heavy. :D
I bought a Halcyon Pioneer 27wing w/ integrated STA to replace the homemade STA I had been using before. It is still not a stable as wearing doubles, but for diving in recreational depths with other single tankers, it serves its purpose. I still feel unconfortable diving deeper than 100 feet without my doubles though. I use my double LP80s for boat dives and for making long or multiple beach dives.

yea i couldnt imagine carrying my lp108s from the beach every dive, my fave set is my 72s.

No prob...

I bet most of us would agree that singles for most OW dives are pretty much the standard and there are some good reasons that this is so.

But...

I bet the sparks would fly if we were to discuss at what point are singles not safe for OW diving. At what point does an OW recreational dive require redundancy in order for that dive to be conducted in a safe and reasonable manner? At what point does an OW recreational dive require more gas volume than a standard AL80 can provide?

I realize that we are way off topic...so...these questions aren't meant to be answered here. Just talkin'...

...so...back to the topic...

uh...oh yah...

My heaviest weight requirement is when I'm in my drysuit with really thick undies while using a single Al80 in salt water. (It's even a little more if I'm using twin Al80s...but a v-weight helps a lot.) So, with the single, I use a FredT 9# plate, a 3# Halcyon STA and then I put 10# split up (2)2#s and (2)3#s in four Halcyon cam band trim pockets tucked tight up against the STA on both sides of the adapter. That lets me keep my belt at 6 to 8 pounds depending on whether or not I have on my cannister light. Not only does this give me a balanced rig but it also makes having dead on trim effortless.

Recently I got a DSS 14# plate to tweak this set up a little. But I gave it to my bud and now I have hard time getting to use it! :11: Guess I'll have to order another one.

Which brings to mind another bummer...I recently ordered a couple more FredT plates...a 12# plate for me and a little custom job for my youngest. Unfortunately, I ordered them shortly before....KATRINA! Now my plates are probably on their way to becoming fossils...deep in the mud.
