All,
I have read a few topics about it but the threads seemed rather old so im asking where people are carrying there SMB and reel on their backplate these days. I have seen some people clip off to butt D-ring. Some people clip off to backplate holes on one of the sides of the backplate. I do not have a drysuit and my wetsuit does not have pockets to carry things so if that is where you carry them please don't comment. For those of you that do carry it on your backplate somewhere, are your SMB and reel already connect or does each have it's own snaps which hold it on the wing or harness somewhere? Thanks everyone!

None of my wetsuits have pockets however I do have a pair of neoprene shorts with pockets, something to consider.

Prior to buying the shorts and on the occasions when I forget them, I clip off my reel and SMB on D rings. Both my reel and SMB have their own clips due to previous experience of the reel coming loose usually at the end of a dive and having to wind in 30M of line once I am back on the boat.

I am also using a loop of bungee now to secure the line on the reel in order that it does not start to come loose.

what D-rings do you clip them to? Hip (left or right side)? Butt? shoulder (left or right side)? thanks!

Instead of just saying where I keep them, I usually suggest to think it through. Where does it make sense? Where will it work for you?
Waist D ring? Is there or will there ever be a deco bottle there? Same with shoulder D ring.
Butt D ring? How comfortable are you with your line coming loose behind you?

I prescribe to a certain way of diving that standardizes where equipment goes, that's how I teach and how I dive. So, for me, everything that will be used on a dive goes in my right pocket, emergency equip goes in the left. This means I either glue on pockets or wear X shorts as suggested above. It's a simple solution that is minimal cost and solves a lot of potential issues.

Eh, to me it is not minimal cost for shorts...every pair I have found have been about 80+ dollars which is quite a lot since ive been transitioning a lot of my equipment (has been very costly lol). I will put them on my list of possible things to buy.

There is probably a standard approved location but for me, I sling a pony on left and I am right handed so I clip it to the right. Which ring somewhat depends on what other gear I have there, such as a lobster bag but typical I hook it to the side of my plate. I use a freedom plate though so the exact location would be a little different then a traditional plate.

I mostly drift dive so it's used every dive. I keep it preassembled and ready to go and use a single bolt snap to clip reel to ring.

For vacation dives with no drysuit pockets: SMB stowed in storage pack in plate. Spool or reel (depending on dive) clipped on my non-DIR right hip D-ring.

I carry a reel and two SMBs. Reel clipped to right hip D-ring (good for long hose routing if not using can light).

One SMB in pouch in backplate:

and one in a tail pouch bolted to the bottom of my backplate (that one can be removed if I'm doing a Caribbean reef dive and don't feel that I need a redundant SMB, although it's hardly noticeable.
