While researching potential dive vacation places, I ran across information stating that Dominica had decided to start whaling. Then I did a search on whaling and found a host of additional countries that enjoy slaughtering highly intelligent beings for the sake of tradition, economics, palate, and other inane reasons.
Japan is going to resume killing Humpbacks for the first time since 1963. Japanese whaling advocates were either children or not even born yet, when the moratorium
began. The tradition of killing whales was broken for 44 years, and yet a new generation of ignorant citizens rises to do dastardly deeds.
Norway and Iceland, as well as a host of other island nations are following Japan's lead and making moves to resume whaling or increase their take.
So, back to Dominica as a barometer. The GDP of Dominica is 468 million or 6,520 per capita. Tourism and agriculture, esp. bananas, are the leading industries. "Pirates of the Caribbean" was filmed there. They promote themselves as the "Natural Island", and their target market is Eco-tourism. Lets hit them where it hurts. No tourists, no Hollywood, no bananas!
The minuscule economic increase from whaling would be completely devastated by a dramatic downturn in tourism, and a refusal to purchase bananas and other products from the country. Anyone canceling trips to the nation should inform the tourism bureau that they will be happy to re-book if the new policy on whaling were repealed.
The complete opposite of Dominica is Norway. One of the highest GDPs in the world, highly educated, recognised as number one in the world on the human development index, yet whaling continues. In fact, the annual Norwegian quota of Minke whales has increased steadily since 1990, from 319 to 1052. Is it possible that Norway is so concerned with human rights, that mere animal rights are a joke?
No more Dale of Norway sweaters for me!
Tradition?! The Vikings did a bit of conquering, raping, and pillaging. How does one decide which traditions to continue? Maybe Norway should resume some of those viking traditions and send a few boats over to Dominica, Japan, Iceland, etc.
Japan? Buy Samsung products instead of Sony. If import cars turn you on, buy VW, Mercedes, BMW, Peugot, Hyundai. DO NOT buy Toyota, Honda, Isuzu, or Nissan.
Its silly to try to effect change economically on Norway or Japan, but it makes a lot of sense with Dominica. Cross it off your dive destination list.
