Have you dove Boulder Res in recent history? Interested in diving there?

I'm looking for places local to Boulder to practice skills, any quick and dirty (muddy?) dive site. If you've dove the reservoir or know someplace else close to Boulder that is 'diver-friendly' please post here.

Lotsa folks go to Aurora Resevoir. Dive spota at Horsetooth Res in FT Collons too.

What is ther in Horsetooth Res. / Where in hores tooth do you dive ?
I grew up ant lived in Longmont untill 4 years ago. I often come back to visit relitives and would like to try diving there.

At Horsetooth, Sunrise beach now has an excellent set-up. You can drive right down to the beach. But... there's nothing to see, just mud. At least that was my experience.

I've often gone to Aurora, it's not bad. But with driving and set-up time, plus fees, I end up wanting to do two dives. It turns into an all-day event. My schedule has become too tight for that.

My limitation is time. If I'm only going to see soup, I might as well do Boulder reservoir. :D

I just need a buddy and a local lake. Anyone game?

Several years ago a group of us dived Boulder Reservoir as a cleanup service. Some of us walked the beaches and picked up trash, and some picked up trash in the water in the swimming area. I was injured then and could not dive, so I was confined to the shore. My friends in the water came out quickly. They could not even see their gauges. They said it was the worst visibility ever.

Send me a PM. I can't make the Rock Lake trip coming up and am looking for an opportunity to get wet. We'll figure something out.

¡Hola amigos!

I called Boulder Res with the diving question (they don't post the diving rules online). After three calls I finally found someone who knew the actual regulations.

The short story is that, because there's power boats on the lake, they require that divers hire a park employee to hover overhead in a boat with dive flags and whatnot while the divers are down, plus a park supervisor should be on location. Yep.

Ah, hmm. Okay, strike-out. I'm still game for a mountain lake or mud puddle. PM sent.

Yep* - diving the coves will give you 12 feet or so of visibility, but the beach is almost always bad. Last time I was there I had 7-8 feet, but this past weekend I went all the way out to the bouys and it was still about a foot. The huge silt cloud from the swimmers trashes the whole area.

This isn't the thread for it, but I'll be at the beach this weekend if anyone is interested. Gonna practice line and compass skills.

*admittedly, part of the mud last time was my swath of silt armageddon in all directions from me flailing in ear pain. Sorry about that.

There will be some diving going on at Chatfield Tuesday, 9/13, at about 3:30.
