Borneo / Sabah sightseeing

Hi All,

I'm planning a trip to Borneo in October for 10 days. I'd like to spend 3-4 days at Kapalai diving Sipadan (if it were up to me it would be more). My fiancee is new to diving and won't want to go diving everyday we're there so I'm looking for other things to do on Borneo for the days we're not at Kapalai.

Any suggestions out there for good sightseeing, hikes, nature outings to do while there?

From Sandakan you go to Sepilok for Orangutans and Labuk Bay for proboscis monkeys. You can also get a boat to Turtle Island.

Or climb mount Kinabalu, pretty easy to do in 2 days but book the accommodation well in advance because it sells out.

Borneo in October you say? There are loads of things to do in Sabah for divers and non divers alike but you really need to plan in advance and work out all the timing exactly if you are to get the most of Sabah. Check out Danum Valley. Stay at the lodge for at least 2 nights if you can. It is a Reserve and Study Centre. It is not a confined reserve so anything you see there is just "passing through". We saw an orang utan close up on several occasions. The guides are excellent and teach you how to recognise signs that the animals are present. Night ride into the forest is just amazing and the early (very) morning walk just as the sun comes up is an experience of a lifetime.

The markets are well worth a look. Also if you want to do Mt Kinabalu try Diethelm travel in KK, prepare for the cold and the walk down takes more out of you than the ascent. The museum used t be good but I haven't been there for a long time.

Yes, don't under-estimate the Mount Kinabalu trip. Some kids died up there a while ago. Played around, got separated from parents, mist = dead. It's a mountain - treat it with respect - and enjoy and marvel.

KK museum - it's a while since I was there but we enjoyed that.
