And there's always The Silent World, by Jacques Cousteau, just re-released by National Geographic Press. I just finished it, and found it to be beautiful, if a little dated.

And don't forget 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea - the descriptions of walking through the coral forest, of undersea hunting, etc., were fun to read 30 years later, after becoming a diver. Likewise, Moby Dick has some very nice passages about the lure of the sea.

Also, any of Gary Gentiles books on wreck diving. Very well-researched stories of sinkings, explorations and dive conditions.

Gold, Galleons and Archeology by Robert Burgess is a nice description of the search for and excavation of the Spanish 1715 gold fleet off of Florida.

Lots of people I know liked Close To Shore, the story of the 1916 shark attacks off of New Jersey, but I found it a bit tedious.

I thought I put Down Time in the list, I just read it too, Dave Barry's story was great.

That's my fault, I missed it. Sorry.

I forgot about his books, although I've read a ton of them. I believe the one that isn't on specific place (NC coast, Florida etc) is Primary Guide to Wreck Diving That was a really good one, with some interesting humor to keep it from being too boring.

Hey thanks for the great book ideas, I'm going to have to visit the bookstores and check out amazon so i'll have some reading for my surface intervals :-D

I've read all the Clive Cussler books which are fiction with diving. One book that I would recommend would be "SHIP OF GOLD in a deep blue sea", it was excellent . The book is about the Central America and it's recovery, an interesting true story.

If you would like to read a humorous book, you can read "So You Want to Live on an Island..." by Gay Morse. She is Asst. Manager at Pirates Point Resort on Little Cayman. It is a collection of humorous stories on diving and living in the Cayman Islands.
You can purchase one via www.islandslife.com or in the Cayman Islands.

This can't be right - Amazon have the cheapest price of Doing it Right: The Fundamentals of Better Diving as $160.00

The last time Bowditch (a long-standing mariner's reference book, published by the US Gov't) was reissued, I found Amazon charging more than five times as much for this volume as would any marine supply store!

Swimming to Antarctia by Lynn Cox. She swam a mile to the continent of Antarctia in 36 degree water. Also set world's record for swimming the English Channel, first person to swim the Bering Strait from Alaska to the Soviet Union.

I liked the book.

I just ordered Doing It Right: Fundamentals of Better Diving. I'm gonna check out some of the other books too. Thanks for all the great recommendations guys.

Okay this isn't Marine/Scuba related, but it's a really good book. I Know This Much is True. by Wally Lamb. It's a big book, and the plot is long, but it's such a good book. Possibly one of the best I've read.
