Besides larger places like Buddy Dive and the Plaza, which also have great diving and snorkeling, we have stayed at Den Lamen, and rented private units too. Some of the best snorkeling was at un named places near some of these private rental units, Light House being the one I remember best.

We rent places through the local Remax there, and they set my brother's family up with a really nice place for quite a bit less than the resorts, for his first trip there.

You can always do A la cart truck, diving, etc. We often do, if we are not with another group doing a package.

As for crime, as Herman says, it is a factor to be aware of, but if you pay attention to the warnings, take security moderately seriously, and pay attention to your belongings and surrounding you should have no trouble. We never have.
