I'm going to bonaire in august, just about all the sites are to 100ft. I like to stay about 50 ft , should i have gone somewhere else or is there good diving at that depth. Also are currents a problem in bonaire. BT is a a good source for bonaire but i never can post a thread there. Thanks

The best stuff is at about 50 feet or shallower... Unless you are doing the Hilma or are at Karpata, that is.

For the most part the dives are all like walking down a hill. The bottom of the hill is about 100 feet where it gets flat and there is nothing but sand. The top of the hill is at about 20 feet. The reef is the hill and exists as the gentle slope of the hill from 20 to 100 feet. If you want to stop at 50 feet, you can by not going "down hill" any more and going left or right It is NOT as if the reef is at 100 feet and that is it. You can dive most of bonaire and not drop below 40 feet, if you want.

Currents are almost non existent, although some sites around the north and south tips tended to have some...

I just got back from my 7th trip to Bonaire. With a couple of exceptions (Hilma Hooker and the double reef area around Alice in Wonderland) we rarely go below 35-40 ft. The reef system starts in a few feet of water (or around 10 at most of the resorts) and slowly drops to a depth of around 35ft at which the reef takes a very sharp drop. Depending on where you are at, it bottoms out at 100 to over 300 ft. Unless you just have some reason/desire to go below 40 ft there is really no need to (the above sites excepted). Most all of the coral and fish life is in the 10 to 50 ft range. We do go deeper on the Hooker just to do a wreck dive and it's a good oppertunity for newer divers to get their first "100ft " dive. The sand channel between the doubles reef is interesting as you can find the occasional ray there as well as garden eels. They are also in the sand around the Hooker.

Currents are generally light to nonexistant BUT they do happen on occasion and you should be aware of them. I have had them go from light to pretty strong during a dive. Even the usually mild currents can add a lot of work so always be sure to check the current direction and head into it. The soft corals will always be pointing down current and the shooling fish under the coral will be looking into the current.

As for BT, you should be able to post there. You do have to join up, just like this board. Jake and the other moderators are very careful with the info you put on the board so no worries there.
