Some policies don't cover pick up trucks. The other issue with using your own is that your insurance provider must pay before you leave. Some can't process payment that fast. THe Car rental co. wants to be paid before you leave.

Going to Bonaire in a few weeks -- the resort recommends that we get the CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) insurance for $350 ! Wow, that's alot of money. I would not get this insurance in the US, but in Bonaire -- not sure. Any advice?

I'd buy it.

Your home policy doesn't cover overseas use, your credit card probably doesn't either. And even if one did, they don't cover off-road use, which on Bonaire, is most of where you'll be for diving, and they don't typically cover trucks, so if you get a pickup trucks and drive it through the park or on to one of the shore diving sites, and something happens, you will be nailed for it.

The other part of the deal is that a lot of the trucks are not-great-shape and I wouldn't want to be left holding the bag when the rental company wants you to pay for something that happened before you picked it up.

Just consider the CDW part of the rental cost.

flots.
