Going to Bonaire for the first time at the end of Sept. Looking for advice on where to stay. Does not have to be the Ritz but would prefer that it is not a "fish camp" either. It will just be my husband and myself. Looking any advice.

Buddy Dive is a good 'Intro. To Bonaire' resort with a good 'package product.' Good reputation and well-known. Their website has a downloadable PDF with rates. The take you to and from the airport. Breakfast buffet and a good house reef are pluses.

Captain Don's Habitat next door is very similar from what I've read.

Let us know what you think of the Buddy Dive offering, especially any concerns, and may help us narrow down good options for you.

Richard.

The other Buddy Dive related property - Belmar Apts. is nice also. It's quieter, south of town has the other Buddy dive shop on-site and you can use the Buddy dive drive-thru tank pickup when diving north. No food on-site is probably the only drawback. I also like the look of Den Laman Condos - haven't stayed there. Bonaire Dive Resort: Best of Bonaire Oceanfront Condominiums Den Laman Bonaire They're on Bari Reef, the Caribbean dive site with the most counted species of fish.

We stayed at Den Laman at the end of April. Nothing fancy, but a nice condo none the less. With the dive operation there, you can get tanks 24hrs per day. It just takes some planning. You can dive Bari reef anytime you like. They keep tanks down on the dock if you want to do a night dive or early AM. You have to go thru 2 locked doors to get up to the rooms, so security was never a issue for us. We stayed in a ocean front room, we were able to watch dolphins playing out in front of our room. We will stay there again next time we head down that way.

Just stayed at Buddy Dive this past April, very nice & excellent dive operation. They have a drive through air fill station with rinse tanks for shore diving as well as boat dives. Excellent breakfast buffet and friendly staff. The rooms have all been updated with brand new, modern kitchens, bathrooms, and furniture. We loved the outdoor tiki bar and dining although the main restaurant was still closed and under construction. Also closed was the larger of the 2 gear storage rooms which made for tight quarters in the one that was open but we brought computer, regulator, masks to the room and everything else was still able to dry overnight in the gear room.

Probably still there, we found a frog fish, bright green in 28' of water between 2 of the orange buoys for their dive boats.

We always stay in Den Laman in an ocean-front 1-bedroom condo. Huge veranda with an unobstructed view of the ocean and Klein Bonaire, and huge at 1000 square feet with A/C in both the bedroom and living room. There are 15 units on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building, very secure with a keyed entry into the stairwell to access the units. The studios are well laid out and convenient for 2 people, though they don't have any views (unless you consider the parking lot a view!).

The dive operation is convenient and right outside your door. You back your truck up to the tank room, load or unload and off you go. 24 hour access to tanks and the gear room, with a nice dive dock out front. Nitrox is included in the package price at no additional cost.

For us, places like Buddy Dive, Capt. Don's, the Plaza, etc. are just too big. We prefer fewer units with less foot traffic, no large dive groups, etc., so somewhere like Den Laman was a no-brainer for us. We do give up things like included breakfast, a pool, more boats for diving, etc., but those things aren't important to us. There are quite a few smaller places like Den Laman, so it is by no means the only one out there.

Because of this, I always recommend that folks do their homework and check out as many different places on-line as they can. Then when they arrive on island, check some of the other places out in person to see if they are places you might want to go in the future.

Just like dive gear, shoes, cars, or anything else....everyone has different preferences and should find what appeals to them best!

For 2 people, Habitat will cost less than Buddy's. We like the shore dive to the north of the Habitat dock--Cliff--which can be accessed from Coral Paradise or several smaller places near Dive Friends new shop just north of Habitat. For 2 people we like the 1br bungalows just behind the Habitat dive shop--better and oceanfront are the newer junior suites...........also near the dive shop. Most of the time, we don't rent a car as a food store and restaurants are nearby and we shore dive at Habitat daily. We usually get a 6 boat dive package so we can go to Klein Bonaire diving, etc.
