A diver has died in a water-related incident in the Far North.

Emergency services responded to reports of a missing diver off Waihihi Bay about 6.40pm on Thursday.

Police found a body in the water just before 2am.

Coastguard New Zealand Regional Manager Jonny Bannister said Coastguard Bay of Islands volunteers took the lead in an extensive search that involved up to 15 private vessels.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
 
Another example of frustratingly deficient reporting by the New Zealand media... multiple reports and not one identifies whether the diver was on tanks or freediving...
