Looking to do my first post certification dive this Saturday. Any recommendations on which place to go? Blue Lagoon or Athens? Why or why not?

You will have quite a drive to Athens but we did just take my 11 year old daughter there this past weekend for her first post-certification dives. It was our first trip to Athens and I will say that for her it was the perfect place to go. There is a limited depth, our deepest point was about 26', the water is warm (mid to upper 80's) so no wet suit is needed if you don't own one, there were no ear biting fish (one of her concerns after certifying at CSSP) and there were a lot of well marked underwater attractions to see. She really enjoyed it and we did too.

Living in Elgin, I would go to LCRA park on Travis. CLose and good place to dive. Blue Lagoon is a great place to get your confidence but to me it is boring becasue there are no fish. Water is good and warm though if you get cold easy.

hey if anyone can help me, i have a question about blue lagoon. my brother and i are new to diving, we were certified in may and have about 7 dives total so far. we have been diving in lake travis with our instructor and were wondering if at blue lagoon it is ok for us to dive on our own? keep in mind we are new to diving, so i dont know if everywhere you go it is necessary to be with an instructor or guide.
thanks

If you have your c-card you are not required to dive with an instructor or a guide. It is very important for you to dive within your limits and comfort zone with your buddy though. Post up when you are going some where and most of the time, someone with more experience will probably be headed to the same place and can join you for a dive or they can offer you advice, tips and what to look for on specific dive locations.

Well thanks for the help. We went diving at the Blue Lagoon Saturday. Nice place to visit, we called ahead and reserved a covered area which wasn't much but still cool. For me this been the best visibility so far 15-25'. We dove Lagoon 1 and looked at everything. There was 4 boats, one had a massive hole ripped in the side which was my favorite. Absolutely nothing living except for a few minnows. Easy to get in & out, friendly people work there, didn't have my C-Card yet but a quick call from my dive shop took care of that. Mostly classes training but only saw two other divers while under. There were apx 30 divers & 15 skin divers. All of the underwater platforms & boats were marked with a buoy wich made it nice because you didn't have to guess where something was. They said they had food on site, but if you go bring a lunch because all they had were overpriced frostbitten microwaveable cheeseburgers, yum. Overall experience was the best I've had so far, I will be back to check out lagoon 2. Then sunday after church we were still in the diving mood so we decided to check out the Blue Hole swimming area in Georgetown. We were there maybe 20 minutes before we had enough. The river wasn't flowing so it was pretty nasty. We saw a few fish only when they were 6" from your face. Very bad visibility maybe 2' when you had something to look at. So much floating particles you couldn't see the bottom till you were laying on it, but now I can say I'v been there dove that. The Blue Lagoon however is worth the drive even tho there is no life, it is warm, apx 30' deep and has good visibility. Just what I was looking for for my first Post-Certification dive. Has anyone dove the wreck SS John Worthington Just outside of Port Aransas? It's a 400' tanker from WWII that sits in the channel in only 25' of water. Think I may check it out along with Mammoth Lake & the Twin Lakes over labor day weekend. Sunday Aug 15th I think we might dive the Comal if there is anyone who could give us any input on where to get in & out I would appreciate that.

If you are looking for an interesting dive that is close, consider Lake Travis Scuba, it is a charter company that for 40 bucks will take you on their boat to 6 or 8 dive sites, two dives per trip. I went last weekend and it was a blast, much more entertaining than staying at the windy point dive park. Not quite as fun as the Red Sea but not as expensive to get there either :)

C-card makes you a full certified diver. I will second the other opinions here. Please dive within your comfort and experience level. If you post up here, I am sure you can find more experienced divers to help you grow safely into your new hobby.

Blue Lagoon is easy to dive. I dove there on July 10th. Visibility was 20' and in some areas may have been 30'. Water temperature was 86 from top to bottom so no wetsuit was needed. There are two lagoons. Both are approximately 30' deep. Don't expect to see any fish life or plant life. There are some very small fish (1-2") which hug the bottom.
