Been doing some blue crabbing in Mass. this year. They seem way faster than Lobster. Plus seem way more aggressive. Has anyone dove or snorkled for these critters? If so did you catch them by hand?

Do it at night... Do it with a bright light and thick gloves. We used to fill giant trash cans with them.

I belive it!! Where did you get them. What state? Did you get them on scuba or snorkling? Also do they FREEZE when you shine a light on them?

Florida... NO, I guess they are sleeping. At any rate, they don't run. It's pretty effortless. We do it on scuba in Crystal River, but you could easily do it on snorkel.

Back when I was younger we used to snorkel around with gloves on and swim up close to them and grab them as quickly as we could. We always got 2 to 3 dozen if we really tried. A really good spot for it was around the Destin jetties!!

Idk if the OP is still interested, but i have relatives that go all the time in mass. Take a flashlight and a gloved hand or net at night and pick them up from a boat. I've never seen them underwater while scuba diving, but i have caught several by hand snorkeling. Snorkeling works, but they are fast and it does take a lot of uneeded effort. I would recomend the at night with a flashlight trick.

California Dungeness by hand.

Maryland Blue by chicken wire net. Can be caught by hand, but they swim fast compared to heavier crabs without back fins.

I think if freediving off your boat or kayak then also bait some traps to attract crabs.

Hi all new to the board. I free dive for Dungeness crabs all the time here in California. Its a blast. I pick the up from behind so as not to get pinched.

Once in a while i do get pinched and i just let go of the crab. The crab lets go and heads to the bottom as quick as it can.

Its my favorite thing to hunt these crabs run and i have to chase them down before i have to take a breath.
