i did a dive today with a new dive buddy, and he also is a new diver, 12 logged dives in one year, first off i want to say he is a great dive buddy, good controle and sticks right to the dive plan, this newbee was better then one experienced diver that i dove with. any way to the point, as we were nearing the end of the dive i looked back to check on him as i do every couple seconds and noticed his MASK WAS FULL OF BLOOD!!!, wow now that will shock a dive partner, at the surface he said he felt no pain and had no idea why it happend, but it happend before to him, any way any opinions on this shocker, as i say there was a lot of blood in his mask of course coming from his nose!!!

equalizing to hard, or with too much force, will do this as the capillaries have burst in your nose/sinus.. This has happened to me twice, buy not equalizing often enough, and descending to quickly, and forcing my equalization.. hope this helps. I will spit up a little blood when I surface, doing the snorting thing to clear my sinuses... Everyone I talk to says, that it because of the above mentioned things, and is normal for that situation...

sorry its gross :)

na not a big deal, or gross, he did have a slow desent and though did also have problems clearing ears, it was just a suprise, as i said the was a lot of blood and was shocking to see at a quick glance!!!!! lol

ive dove with a guy that that hapen to about 50% of the time. usually not bad, just a little pink in his mask at the end of the dive

cool guys, just thought this was a good topic, as i said i looked back and saw NOTHING BUT DARK RED!!!!! he made clear he was fine, but i guess as an E.M.T i got a mental note that said hey dude lets see if all is ok, i laugh at this now, but i was not going to laugh then, i went into respond to help mode at that point in a calm manner, all went well but i wonder if there is a prolonged problem for him and i hope not, as i say he is a GREAT new diver

My first time diving the same happened to me, as well. Once one the boat, I had a lot of snot and did that suck it down your mouth to spit it out, and lo and behold it was bloody enough to kinda freak me out. I let my DM know about it and he was like no big deal. Yes, I did have a difficult time equalizing - took me around 7 mins to descend the 1st 30'!

sounds like this is a common thing, though not to minimize anyones happenings, but this poor guy had about 1/2 inch of blood in both sides of his mask, and LOL, but it looked like the texes chain saw massacar in his mask, lol, i am used to blood but this was like(whoe check that out , he is flooding his mask!!! no that isnt water its like red!! ya , its blood) lol, it was a sight you dont see under water every day so it was , whoe dude, hehehe, any way you all know what i mean, again it sounds from what you all say to be common thing, and not to be worried. thanks all

Do a search on SB regarding "mask squeeze" and you'll find additional information. When descending you must also equalize you mask. (Class should have covered his) It will break fine capilaries in the nose and sinus areas due to the squeeze action of the mask. Have him exhale through his nose similar to clearing his mask and this will eliminate the squeeze.
