I am looking at a new mask for the season. I've dove clear silicone masks since my 'OW checkouts year's ago. I have been looking at the TUSA Visualator in either a clear or black silicone. The fine folks at Divers Supply, Doraville said that glare is cut down with the black. I don't plan on becoming a photographer. I would just like to be able to read my computer better in Lanier's often murky depths.
I am 53 and wear contacts, would you recommend black or stay with clear silicone with a mask like the Visualator?
I would just like to hear from some of you who may dive both the black and clear silicone masks and what has been your experiences in Lanier.
THANKS!

What do you really like about the black? I've dove the clear silicone since the early '80s. Do you miss anything and can you really read your computer or gauges better in low vis. water with a black silicone mask?

I'm not looney, but I've dived clear and black silicone masks.

I never had a problem with glare with the clear silicone masks, but changed to black recently.

Why did I change? I dive alot and funky stuff starts to grow in the cracks and crevices of the mask. Its obvious when this happens through the clear silicone masks.

I went black this time so I didn't catch hell everytime someone see's the science project growing inside my mask. Out of sight, out of mind :)

Black really cuts down on glare. I can only use a clear skirt in DARK water (less light).

I dive clark hill in Augusta. Clear silicone is a light rust/light brown from the silt after a year or so. I have the black silicone version of the Visualator. I won't say it is a low volume mask - it is not compared to some/many. But I like it for winter diving - much less face exposure with a hood(covers more of the face).

I buy black because it does not turn yellow. Let me know when you are ready to dive Lanier I live across the street from it and can dive most weekends. And Mat if you ever get tired of crawling around caves and diving those clear pretty springs come up here and I can show you some beer cans laying in the mud in 5 ft vis and 50 degree water:D heck I am ready to go back to florida.

I also think Pete needs to come dive with the birds when he is here for the Georgia dive show,if you have time let me know,we can take the looneybird cruiser out and do some dives off it.

How do you notice the difference in focusing ability in reading gauges and computers compared to using the clear masks and the black masks. I've heard it's easier to focus using the black, is it really true?
