Gonna be staying on Maui for a couple days in one of the hotels near Black Rock. I read previous posts about renting tanks at the Sheraton, etc. What else do they rent? Just tanks? Thinking in terms of weight with this question.

Also, suggestions on what to see when diving the area? Have not dove there before so looking to find out where/how to head once in the water.

Also, what is the closest dive shop other than the Shearton's rentals?

Thanks

JT

The Sheraton dive shack also has weights as well as doing guided tours.

The nearest place for cheaper tanks and gear rental is Maui Dive Shop store in the Whaler's Village, the shopping mall right in the center of the Kaanapali resort. It's a branch outlet more geared towards snorkeling and apparel sales, but they have a reasonable selection of dive gear.

Lahaina Divers and Pacific Dive, both on Dickenson Street in downtown Lahaina stock a full line of gear.

Diving Black Rock is pretty obvious. The easiest dive is out and back from the beach right in front of the Sheraton, at the base of the southside of the rock. The steep face of Black Rock continues underwater, making a little miniwall. Most of the dive is in the 25-30' range. One thing to watch out for is a heavy current as you go around the corner of the rock. Some local kids enjoy jumping off the rock and surprising divers, so don't freak out if somebody suddenly drops in on you -- one time I ended up having to arm wrestle a guy to keep him from using my octo.

there is a maui dive shop just down the main road in lahaina, about 10 minutes drive..it's on the front side of a really small mall on the right hand side as you drive to lahaina

The current varies in direction at blackrock - The last time I dove there the current ran North to South the entire dive, so we did a "drift" dive basically. Made for a pleasant dive, though quite fast even without much finning. I have been there other times when the current was running South to North -

Another option is to ride the current around the point - you can get in on the north side of the "rock" and get out on the beach in front of the Sheraton.

Have fun

Aloha, Tim

While Maui Dive Shop branches aren't quite as common as timeshare and activity sales booths, there are quite a few of them. It sounds like you are referring to the Cannery Mall store.

sorry, that wasn't meant to offend...but compared to the malls here it's small..:D

and yeah it is at cannery mall

ahh - you mean the largest mall on the west side??? lol I work there part time selling Harley Davidson T-Shirts

3 Maui Dive Shops that I know of on this side of the island are: Whalers village, Kahana Gateway Plaza & Cannery Mall... But you cannot rent tanks at one and return them to another...

Yeah, I kinda figured you were using Valley Fair as the comparison.

stanford, hillsdale..they're all much bigger....wasn't jsut talking about valley fair...that's an unfair comparison on any mall...

I love that area....and when you do Black Rock just look up.. you will be the main attraction for the snorklers!! Do me a favor and drink a mai-tai for me at the Hula Grill..right next to Whalers. It is on the sand and has the best dipping stuff for the bread....ahhhhh you may never leave...
Hope you have a great time
Squidgy..
