Have you had any experience of alcohol related diving rituals? Some kind of "test" for passing your OW or for your 100th dive, that sort of thing.

I'm doing some research for an article that may or may not appear in the UK diving related media and would be interested in hearing about your experiences, positive or negative, as well as your views on alcohol and diving, can they ever mix?

Thanks and looking forwards to your replies,

Brendan O'Brien

I think it would be silly to have alcohol related rituals with diving. First of all being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while diving will void your Dive Insurance. Secondly, alcohol consumption can lead to dehydration...and dehydration is a contributing factor to DCS. So I would say that's all negative.

It doesn't have to take place before a dive...

I have always heard that your 100th dive should be done in your birthday diving suit and for that to happen there would need to be a large amount of refreshments for me and the people I'm diving with.

I've also heard the 100th dive naked thing...but I don't think alcohol has to be involved.

You are correct, but after a dive it still "can lead to dehydration...and dehydration is" still "a contributing factor to DCS." She is still correct.

There's a thread here somewhere about getting your cert handed over to you in a glass of beer. It doesn't have to be on a dive day. I'm still correct too. :D

For me to make my 100th dive naked, in front of the crazy, bent on revenge, practical jokers, and all around pirates I dive with I do not want to be asking where has the rum gone!

But I'm a crazy one as it is...do not follow my lead. I'll probably be in a drysuit diving some wreck someplace off the coast here without even knowing it's my 100th dive.

I believe I said that.

What's with these kids diving naked on number 100? Number 69 is the nude dive.
