We were at BH this past week, Aug 14th-15th and HOLY Cow, I felt like I was in a movie about the southside of LA. It was downright scary at times, sitting there alone guarding gear, with all these groups of "men" walking around. Sure they were there to cool off in the water, but they were also hanging out topside most of the time. I really felt like I needed a weapon. Saturday there were at least 200 jumpers/swimmers, mostly families with small kids who insisted on standing on the stairs. People were actually blocking divers from getting in and out of water and refusing to move, there were some confrontations and eventually the swimmers moved.
:shakehead:
Sunday was the return of some of those families, but then the gangs showed up. One lifeguard was on duty for about 15 minutes at a time each day, showing up and walking around then leaving. On Sunday he actually called the cops and got a few of the thugs thrown out, don't know what they did. Later the lifeguard asked a few more of them to leave... ugly shouting from parking lot as they left, me shaking and worried a fight might break out. Fun, fun. :shakehead:

There was a meeting in Santa Rosa on Thursday night apparently, to discuss Blue Hole and how they can improve the situation, what can be done about the divers and swimmers issues. The lifeguard told some divers about the discussions... they say by next summer there will be permanent security at BH all day long, and permanent life guards. They also said the building will be open and charging all entrants. We'll see.

As far as the diving went.... from 7am til about 10am it was wonderful, only divers there and the occasional family tourists. As the temps rose (it was around 100 degrees both days, hot and humid), the swimmers started trickling in. The rough guys showed around noon. So if you are going there to dive anytime before Labor Day, or when the weather starts to cool off, be sure to take along someone to sit and guard your stuff. I had several people walk right up and stare at our stuff, smile at me and walk off... I know what they were thinking.

Our divers got certified without issues with the crowds and out of there before noon yesterday.... but BH did not show itself well to these new divers. The rude crowds, the issues getting in and out of water, the trash everywhere, the nasty bathrooms... I wish an Official would show up and see what the divers see on days like Sunday. Divers are their money makers, not these thugs who just show up and trash the place!!

I will post some photos from the weekend later. I only got in one dive. :depressed:

I have been at the Hole when I felt that my gear was not safe leaving it out. The solution was to store it in the car.

Sounds like it was a mess down there this weekend. I have never felt unsafe diving there, sorry you may have felt that way. I have a feeling once the swimming is no longer free, the problem will go away.

I have been going to BH several times per year for 10yrs now and I have always been concerned about gear being left out, but never have I been concerned about my own safety just sitting there in a chair. I really felt like I was being scoped out for a robbery. Locking up all the gear was not an option this weekend. Ron's truck has an open bed. More than once thugs stopped at the trucks and looked in them to see what was there. Normally if someone is sitting 5' away from a vehicle, then people don't stop. This weekend I was certain something was going to happen, a confrontation or a fight, or worse. Really, really bad vibes from the crowd.

crowds on Saturday, mostly families with kids... but too much traffic on the stairs!

Sunday morning started off perfect!

I attempted to take pictures of all the "colorful" characters who showed up later in the day, but I decided not to as I got some really unfriendly looks when I pointed the camera at a few..

Ron and Scott got to do a little tech practice/training drills:

Wow, that is a lot of swimmers. I have been thinking about going to BH this summer, perhaps I'll wait for the fall. Thanks for the report.

I think I've only been to BH once in the "summer", not counting going to Stella's to get air fills after diving each day at RL. I don't think I would drive that far (from Colo) to dive BH in the summer, although I know many instructors who prefer it to the poor vis at Chatfield/Aurora. I personally prefer to dive the mountain lakes in the summer.

That said, I'll be down to Santa Rosa again this coming weekend (19-22) for tech diving at RL, and fills each evening at BH.

What is the draw to BH for the swimmers? Is it the cliff diving? Why not use the lake right next door with the cool water slide? I've been told it too is free to swimmers.

Wow. Things have changed. The last time I was at the BH was... uh... 1996 (I had to look it up in the log). It was busy on the weekends back then too, but I never felt threatened.

Some kind folks have been encouraging me to go back (Ron) but this isn't helping matters.

What is the draw to BH for the swimmers?
Free scuba gear. :eyebrow:

I honestly think the big draw during summers is: #1 to see the scuba divers, #2 it is cold water and cools off more than that lake, #3 jumping off the ledge is a status thing, #4 they see that "Visit New Mexico" commercial on tv, showing Blue Hole and decide to go there on vacation. Seriously, most of the "people" showing up in summer are not locals, they are there from other areas in the state or other states. There is also a prison in the area, and some people have suggested that they are all there to visit friends or relatives at the prison then stop by BH for rest of day. I can say that most of the people there on Sunday looked like that is plausible!!

The good thing is that soon the problem will be gone... as soon as school starts back and the weather cools off. Nobody goes swimming in 62 degree water when air temp is only in 70s. :D

They should hire an off duty cop to park his cruiser in the parking area, less than reputable visitors won't be sticking around when they see the fuzz in the area.

This is New Mexico after all, sounds like some ethnic sensitivity. "I felt like I was in a movie about the southside of LA" Blue Hole is a public park, all should be welcome. Most of the divers are from out of town, trying to restrict access to the locals doesn't seem right.
