Hi, I'll be going to Fiji June 24-July 9. I'm spending one week diving with Kai Viti and staying at Bethams and one week at matava on Kadavu. I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of food I could expect at bethams and the nearby area. Is there a restaurant there? Are thre restaurants in the vicinity? Hows the food? I know the diving is gonna be great! Thanks.

Hi Nikyyo
Bethams have a beachside 'cafe', I wouldn't call it a restaurant. Its very quaint and serves basic meals that a hungry diver will just love, but don't think caviar and salmon, think spaghetti and pizza, fish etc. They also have a shop to buy some foods to cook yourself in the cottages. Over the hill at Bamboo Beach Resort (if it is still in operation) has a nice restaurant (with nice prices to go with it), probably a 20 minute walk from Bethams. Mcdonalds is next door to Bethams (not the McDonalds your thinking of) they also have a small beachside restauarant with meals. One of them and I can't remember which? has a beachside Lovo Feast once a week which is great value. You certainly won't starve there, but it isn't quite the Ritz Carlton!

If you need/want to drink decent coffee, bring pre-ground coffee and a nonbreakable French Press type coffee maker. We also shopped for food and other beverages in Raki Raki to bring with us to Nananu-I-Ra, since the supplies there were limited. I think Bamboo Beach Resort is still closed, but Wananavu Resort across the channel used to have a pretty good restaurant.

Thank you for the responses. I'm with you chicoval on the Coffee. I have a whole setup i travel with because it is usually impossible to get a good cup. I bring my own along with a melitta funnel and little electric water heating element. All i need is access to milk. Is it easy to access places across the channel (i.e. are there frequent boat trips?). Thanks.

This guy travels with a coffee setup that looks like a meth lab. He has to have his java or he is a zombie!!

There is a "water taxi" arrangement that Betham's can call for you, or you can informally hitch a boat ride over. Travel between the close-by main island and Nananu is unscheduled, but there is usually a fair number of boats coming or going. Your dive operator might be helpful for transport, since they have to go over to pick up dive clients from both sides of the channel, as well as go over for mail, supplies, fuel, etc. There is a dairy in Suva, so access to good milk products for your coffee is likely. Keep in mind, electricity was made by diesel-powered generator when I was last there, and is turned off a lot. Coffee is important!

You should really be looking forward to diving in Kadavu. It is, without a doubt one of (if not the most) spectacular places to go in Fiji. I'm talking 30m+ visibility warm water, pleanty of things to see and great fun. I live in Suva and visit places like Beqa and Kadavu often (trip planned this weekend on our private boat). Enjoy and if you need any informationa bout Fiji dont hesitate to ask.

just another quick thing, there is a isalnd about 20 miles South West of Savu Savu (town on the 2nd largest island Vanua Levu up the top) called namenalala. There is a small, up market resort on the island and the water there is just phenominal. So many things to see, beautiful water and great spots... you should really consider it...

Thanks lil_hughesy. I am very much stoked for this trip. Don't know if we'll have time for that other island though: but theres always trip #2!!!.
