My base layer (under the SmartWool) is just REI’s store brand thin polypro. Works well.
 
Also, when you're on the road you may not be able to wash/dry merino fast enough w/o destroying the garments.
What I have is the thinnest but I just throw it in front of a vent or better yet a fan and in no time it's dry. If I'm driving somewhere I always take a small fan anyway. Even my neoprene drysuit is dry if in front of a fan overnight.

When flying.. Idk:) I don't really fly much.
 
Many thanks for the replies everyone. Will probably tale a look at the UA Heat ones - will probably do the same as the more expensive FE J2's
