hank harris:
thanks, Andy.

As most of my diving is in CA (and it can get verrry dark under the kelp) I think I need 20w+

It looks like several companies make quality lights (tho some are perhaps better values than others); I need to narrow down the search. I picked Salvo to ask about only because lots of folks here give them high marks.

I use the Halcyon 18W HID in Southern CA, a well as the 10W.
The 10W doesn't really cut it in all conditions (however my 10W lighthead not focusable and the beam spreads quite a bit).

The 18W is much nicer, and some of my buddies have the 21's which are good too.

I think the Salvo lights are better designed than the Halcyons, and that's where I'd go for my next light.

Spoon:
you said it best:) my 21w salvo was like a lighthouse uw keeping the group aware of our location at all times.

Didn't keep me & Pakman with you did it;)

If I'm right about the dive, it was a very intense drift, and yes, both Pakman (also both packing HIDs similar to Spoon) and I were separated from the other 4 and even with just the two of us, the lights made a huge difference an allowing us to signal quickly whilst concentrating on what was a potentially dangerous situation.

Like Spoon, I'd never considered HIDs for day-diving in the tropics, but was very surprised how useful they were!

actually i was talking about another incident in anilao wherein i was the only one with an hid. i totally forgot about that incident, that pg dive was certainly a good example of the practicality of hids in deteriorating conditions.

I have the 4.8a 21W remote head Salvo, it is the best money I've ever spent. As others have said, in less than optimal vis, it is a great tool.

I am a Salvo dealer...so take this with a grain of sale. The Salvo lights really are the best lights in my opinion on the market. I think they are the only light with a full 1 year warranty.

If at all possible I would get the 21 watt light as it will stand out much better than the 10 watt. The only other decision is burn time and you should just make an honest assessment of what your needs are likely to be. I am staying with NIMH for now on my personal light as I dont' need the extra burn time that LION provides.

If any of you are interested in any Salvo products PM me and I can give you a modest discount on the line via PM.

Also I have started an online store but it is just getting up and running so dont' expect much yet.
It will take awhile to get all the products on it up.

Thanks,

Brent
