Pulled the following off ebay (deepdivediscounts):

Salvo Diving Canister light, 13.5 Amp NMiH/HID 24 Watt $1,329.00

Salvo Canister Light, 4.8 Amp Li-Ion 21 Watt HID $1,050.00

Salvo Canister Light, 7.2 Amp Li-Ion 21 Watt HID $1,200.00

Anyone compared the differences side by side or have input on any of these? I need a bright, high-quality light.

Probably are better prices elsewhere... if you know where, please let me know.

Thanks!

thanks, Andy.

As most of my diving is in CA (and it can get verrry dark under the kelp) I think I need 20w+

It looks like several companies make quality lights (tho some are perhaps better values than others); I need to narrow down the search. I picked Salvo to ask about only because lots of folks here give them high marks.

I don't have a 13.5 amp NIMH light -- I have the 4.8 amp NIMH 21W. I cannot say enough good things about this light. Bright, focused, compact . . . good for signalling, good for illumination in poor visibility. Charges quickly, and I liked getting both batteries so I can use one while the other is charging. It's a lovely piece of equipment. The only thing I've found it isn't good for is night dives in clear, tropical water. There, it's overkill. Doesn't stop me from loving it to bits, though :)

I just completed my first dives with my Salvo 4.5 amph 10 watt HID and it was very very bright. I picked mine up for 650. Went into the "Ballroom" at Ginnie springs last Thursday and my g/f and I were the only ones in there, the 10 watt lights lit that cavern up like daylight.

Provided all the light we would need in dark situations, though I have heard great things about the 21 watt lights. Last Thursday we also had to pick up a backplate at Salvo, so we met the guys that built our lights, and let me tell you, you couldn't ask for nicer people to deal with, and they personally take pride in the lights that they make.

fwiw,

Chris

Hi Hank,

Just as a matter of thought, take a look at Green Force. Our 21 watt impact resistant HID system with 9 Amp battery lists for $1,156.00 Our 4.5 amp battery, same light head retails for $951.00. All batteries are NiMH

If you have any questions, let me know. The benefits to Green Force are listed to your left.

Thanks - Greg

Sorry to bring this back.
Salvo is making some very good dive lights, if I've to choose, I would chose one with Li batteries, then my desire illumination (e.g. over 20W for canister) then suddenly, when I searched some old threads, I realize some Australian companies are selling similar lights for a bit lower price.

Any expert around who would like to comment?

you said it best:) i too have the 4.8 amp 21w li-ion and am all praises. i never figured why people would take their hids on bright sunny days in the tropics. i soon realized how imprtant it was when we were doing a drift dive. as we descended deeper the water was filled with particles and my 21w salvo was like a lighthouse uw keeping the group aware of our location at all times. i cant stress how important it is. now i dive with my hids most of the time:)

for value for money you cant go wrong with the 4.8 amp. plenty of burn time. the 13.5 is a bit to much for my needs.

I am jealous Spoon, just jealous.
If I need to fix my car, the price seems to be normal to me, but I could never imagine to buy a flash light (/canister) with that amount.... you know what I mean?

just think of it as an important investment in diving. your uw experience will change once you have it. i thought it was a capricious piece of gear until i actually tried it out firsthand
