The old one with character on the wall.

I personally use a Rob Allen and absolutely love them they are an excellent gun and easy to use. I have never used but have heard that Riffe and Wong guns are amazing. Go to Spearboard Spearfishing Community - Powered by vBulletin and you can find ALL the info you need on guns. A lot of people on that site use wong guns from what I have heard they are awesome guns and Darrel is one hell of a guy. AB Biller is a good lower priced gun but it really depends on how much you want to spend, what type of fish you are going for, and the style of gun.

MAKO Spearguns - Why Railguns Are Superior

I've used these guns for both scuba and freediving and think they are the best value on the market today.

As they say, "it ain't the arrow, it's the Indian".
But using a 65 inch gun to shoot halibut isn't the best choice. And using a 40 inch gun to shoot wahoo or mahi in blue water is like shooting pheasant with a pistol.
I have a couple Riffes and they are nice. I also have a Wong and am getting another tomorrow. I hunt in very clear water though and my "short" gun is 55 inches. My "long" gun is 63.
Daryl Wong is a great guy, a very experienced spearfisherman and has the best customer service of any company I've every dealt with. He hand builds every gun he sells. As he told me, "If I hire someone to help me, it's not a Daryl Wong gun anymore".
I ordered a GR hybrid 55 to use with a floatline, and he put a reel on it....no charge...so far. Going out with him tomorrow. ya man.

Don't let them worry y9ou. More humane to get the right fish everytime, than to catch anything and throw something back and maybe it suffers.

I agree with brands of rob allen, pelaj and riffe. However if your a beginner just go for something cheap to practise with. I agree with starting with a hawaiian sling. Maybe you could find a club to find a mentor?

I started with a polespear. Went out and got a speargun after I lost my first Lingcod. I got a cheap gun and still use it for California groundfish. As DumpsterDiver said about the best deal is a railgun. I have a carbon railgun. Shoots like a laser. Dead on.

Find out what length you need for your area. Maybe check out your local section on Spearboard or go out with a local club.

Contact Mako Speargun. It can be a good gun to start with.

Very few spearos end up with the gun they began with.

A 63" Wong is a great open water gun, a superb choice when hunting big fish in that particular enviornment.

Not my first choice when hunting 18" snapper down in culverts and limestone ledges.

As recommended by many posters before me, consider starting with a pole spear and targeting the appropriate sized fish.

Check with your LDS to see if they sponsor a spearfishing club and get in contact with them. Most would love to have a new member and a experienced mentor would be able to provide valuable information and maybe let you shoot their guns to give you an idea of what works in your home waters.

Good luck.

How would you like to have something stick into you like that. How do you think them fish feel. They are doing nothing then you try to take their life away. Man why would you wont to do something like that. I would never ever use a spear gun.........I will yell at you later my friend just called to see if I wanted to go fishing so bye bye.

Hey desert_gold_hound:

I read your post and understand where you're coming from. Let me ask you, do you eat fish? Do you eat meat? Or are you a true bonified Vegan (no meat, fish, dairy...only produce grown in the ground). If you do eat fish, chicken, beef, pork etc. you should see how they harvest these animals. Our goal is to shoot fish in the most humane way possible. Typically right behing the eye will kill the game instantly.

We only take what we are going to eat. No chuming the waters for the sake of the sport. Let me remind you..........every fish in the ocean WILL be eaten by another fish. Just mother nature doing it's job. But, by us spero guys taking the largest fish we can harvest, allows the second animal in the pecking order to become top 'dog' and procreate the species with the strongest genes.

I very rarely take the largest fish. I typically will shoot the closest (legal) fish in a school. I'm serious about this too. Always better to take the close shot and get a clean kill; a bird in the hand and all that.

Remember, spearfishing is the most SELECTIVE type of fishing with the lowest by-catch of any method of take.
