Nevermind, as soon as I posted I saw a thread, ironically posted by me when I first started cruising and diving. 6 hours post dive in shallows is the best time to do an high intensity workout.

My non-expert common sense approach - IMHO the best way to losing pounds would be a zone 2 workout like walking at a pace near 110 steps a minute for 150 mins per week (or 35 mins per day in 5 days a week) ... If you try to do it in a fasted state in the morning after 9-10 hours of not consuming anything you might see better weight loss results…

I imagine such a workout will have less possibility of micro-tears in muscle and ligaments attracting bubble formation in tissues …

Interesting topic - let the medical experts chime in …

I vote never! :thumb:

High intensity?

You sure about that?

This is an old topic.

Good article, however after asking around, I discovered that I should be fine. The diving I'll be doing is at 20ft or less. I have been advised that it's best to exercise after my dive.

This never used to be an issue, but we have this family friend that can cook so good. I've been food binging about a week before Thanksgiving and during Thanksgiving oh my she made this 3 cheese Mac and Cheese that stole the show. Well needless to say, I've gained 20 pounds. Since it's recent I know I can drop it but I also need to start diving sidemount for ANDP. Hence my dilemma. 🤣

If you're referring to heart rate zones as typically defined in a 5 zone system based on lactate thresholds, most regular healthy people (i.e. not experienced race walkers) can't really get into zone 2 when walking on flat ground. Walking is more of a zone 1 activity. Or in other words, if a brisk walk gets someone into zone 2 then that's a sign of some underlying pathology and they should seek a medical evaluation before diving.

Most people are targeting fat loss rather than weight loss per se. In practice for an isocaloric diet, eating before versus after cardio exercise doesn't seem to make any significant difference for fat loss. Some people find time restricted feeding (intermittent fasting) to be effective for reducing total calorie intake so if you find it helpful then go ahead but it isn't necessarily the best approach for everyone.

Well I had a vague recollection of recommended cadence from online papers like this one for example: Walking cadence and intensity

Consistent with our previous report in 21 to 40-year-old adults, cadence thresholds of 100 and 130 steps/min emerged as heuristic values associated with 3 and 6 METs, respectively, in 41 to 60-year-old adults.

As for low intensity zone 2 exercise in fasted state again I was going by online research like this : Exercise training and fasting which considers both trained athletes and normal individuals and observes that
Exercising during a fasting state increases lipolysis in adipose tissue while also stimulating peripheral fat oxidation, resulting in increased fat utilization and weight loss.

Possibly doing it closer to the 15-16th hour of being fasted might be more effective than doing it within a 9-10 hr window…

Diving to 20' and exercising isn't going to be an issue. Deco diving after AN/DP and exorcising is a big no no unless something has changed in the last few years.
