For all you Cozumel enthusiasts is there a best time of year to dive for photo divers. I did a dive when I was on a cruise ship and the currents were ripping. No way I could get any photos. Is every day different depending on site location?

When the currents are rolling which is pretty much all of the time your best option is wide angle and be ready to tee up shots on the fly. Macro is possible if you get down stream of a reef head and out of the current. Otherwise, off of the shore you can do macro.

Not only does the current vary from site to site...it can vary from day to day at the same site. I did a 3 tank dive today and there was very little current on any of the dives but you need to come here expecting there to be some current and maybe lots of it. If you luck out like we did today, then that is a bonus.

If you can get yourself to Colombia Shallows it's as great place to shoot pix. The current has always been very light when I have been there and it's very shallow with plenty of life.

The currents are unpredictable and can be strong or mild at just about any time of the year. But, it seems to me that the currents are more likely to go crazy in the Spring, so rather than say a certain of the year is best, I would have to vote that the Spring is less desirable from a photo standpoint. I think it has only been in the March-April time frames that I have found currents and resulting suspended sand "bad" enough that I just left the camera behind and enjoyed the rides. Even then, some days and some locations were okay while others were an underwater sand storm. Regardless of the season I often look for good photo ops that are under/behind reef structure and thus protected form the current. If you are diving from a cruise ship then I suppose the resulting limited time and operator choice probably makes things tougher.

March and April can, and usually are, be times for strong currents, more than other months. So it is possible to say which are the worst months for photos/currents and that comes from 23 years of experience here.
